Description
Haruomi Ginbei Sawatari, often called Ginbei or simply Gin, is a central character in the anime OniAi. Though her name and manner of speaking might initially suggest otherwise, Ginbei is a young girl. She is fourteen years old, with a birthday on February 16th and an A blood type. Her appearance is delicate and soft, featuring white hair cut to neck length and green eyes, and she is typically seen in her school uniform.

Ginbei has been a close acquaintance of the protagonist, Akito Himenokouji, since their early school years, attending the same elementary and middle school in Kyoto. She is described as a highly rational and sharp-minded individual who is not afraid to voice her thoughts, often taking pleasure in playfully pointing out Akito’s weaknesses and shortcomings. Despite her intellectual and sometimes critical demeanor, she has a softer side, enjoying activities such as reading, tea ceremony, and especially sweet foods, with her favorite being shaved ice. She is also known for her skill in making delicious meals from inexpensive ingredients.

Her motivations are deeply tied to her feelings for Akito. Ginbei harbors a secret, unrequited love for him, a fact that remains unknown to the oblivious Akito, who continues to regard her as his best platonic friend. Concerned about Akito living with his sister, Akiko, after his move to Tokyo, Ginbei transfers to the same school, the prestigious Saint Liliana Academy. She is persuaded by the student council president to take on the role of the student council treasurer. In a further effort to monitor the situation between Akito and his sister, she eventually moves into the same shared dormitory, where she often assists with cooking responsibilities.

Ginbei’s family background is unique and influences her personality. She comes from the wealthy and influential Sawatari family, a long-established line of merchants. However, her upbringing was governed by strict and unusual household rules. To teach her the value of money and how to manage it under limited conditions, she was raised with very little spending money, forced to live frugally. Additionally, she was given a traditional masculine name and was raised as a boy during her early childhood, which explains her use of a typically male self-referential pronoun. These rules also prohibited her from earning her own money, making her financially dependent on her family.

A recurring aspect of her behavior is her quiet frustration with Akito’s persistent lack of awareness regarding her romantic feelings. Whenever he overlooks her hints or treats her purely as a good friend, she has a habit of mumbling to herself about his cluelessness. Astutely, she theorizes that Akiko’s intense brother complex stems from the girl’s long separation from their parents, causing her to transfer her filial affections onto her brother, with no one around to correct this misunderstanding. Throughout the story, Ginbei’s role is that of the sharp-tongued but caring childhood friend, whose rational exterior masks a deep emotional vulnerability and a hopeful, yet often disappointed, romantic interest.
