Description
Gustave is a member of the Incognito, the elite knightly order serving the Ulgarian religious organization that opposes the kingdom of Edelstein. As a subordinate to the group’s leader, Erecpyle Dukakis, he takes part in various missions to capture Princess Ecarlate and hinder her journey to the imperial capital for her arranged marriage.

In terms of personality, Gustave is characterized by a frivolous and laid-back demeanor, often coming across as unserious or distracted. Despite this casual exterior, he is noted for his sharp instincts and strong sense of situational awareness, making him a surprisingly reliable and adaptable operative. He is deeply trusted by his comrades, often taking on the more troublesome and labor-intensive tasks that others wish to avoid. However, his most defining flaw is his persistent weakness for women. He frequently prioritizes visiting hostess bars and flirting over his duties, and his various romantic escapades are well-known among his peers. This behavior stems from a deeper personal history, as he is, in fact, a divorced man.

Gustave’s primary motivation is not driven by grand ideology or religious fervor but rather by loyalty to his companions and a desire to fulfill his role competently, even if he complains along the way. He is a contrast to other members of the Incognito, such as the masochistic Leon or the obsessive KT, as his vices are more worldly and grounded. He serves as a supporting antagonist, providing muscle and strategic support for Erecpyle’s schemes without harboring the same intense personal rivalry with the protagonist Kon Hokaze.

His key relationships within the story are defined by his interactions with his fellow knights. He works closely under Erecpyle Dukakis, though his loyalty does not prevent him from being skeptical of his leader’s conclusions. For instance, after a major battle where Erecpyle believes he has killed Kon and the princess, Gustave remains unconvinced and takes the initiative to spy on the heroes’ companions, Sainglain and Mariandale, to confirm their deaths. This shows a degree of independent thought and pragmatism that sets him apart. He is also frequently monitored by his teammate KT, who watches him to ensure he focuses on the mission instead of visiting hostess clubs. This dynamic highlights that while he is competent, his teammates are well aware of his unreliable nature concerning women.

While Gustave does not undergo a major transformative character arc, his role demonstrates a subtle development of reliability. He proves to be more perceptive and diligent than his frivolous nature initially suggests, as seen when he successfully tracks the heroes to a secret funeral, carrying out his reconnaissance mission effectively even in the absence of direct combat. His abilities lie primarily in his resourcefulness and observational skills as a field operative. He is a capable warrior like the rest of the Incognito, but his most notable asset is his ability to blend in, gather intelligence, and adapt to unexpected situations, even if he constantly grumbles about the effort involved.
