Description
Hex is a fictional character who serves as a primary antagonist in the second season of the anime Jormungand Perfect Order. Her background is rooted in a strict military career. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, she became a member of the 3rd Special Operations Group, an all-female special operations unit. When this unit was disbanded for political reasons, Hex resigned from the military rather than accept a promotion that was intended to buy her silence. Following her resignation, she was recruited by George Black, a high-ranking CIA European section chief, and became a Paramilitary Operations Officer for the agency.
The driving force behind Hex’s fanatical personality is a profound personal loss. She was stationed in Afghanistan after her fiancé was killed in the September 11 attacks. This event fueled an ardent, uncompromising patriotism and a deep-seated hatred for terrorists and, by extension, arms dealers who supply them. This worldview makes her a formidable and ruthless opponent. In her role at a CIA black site, she personally interrogated suspected terror suspects and would execute them if they refused to cooperate. Her methods are extreme and brutal, and she is given significant latitude to operate as she sees fit.
Her personal vendetta is directed squarely at Koko Hekmatyar, the series' protagonist and an international arms dealer. This mutual grudge stems from a past encounter years earlier. During a night mission, Hex led a squad that pursued a young Koko through the woods. In the ensuing firefight, one of Koko's subordinates, a man named Echo, was killed while saving Koko’s life. As a result of this traumatic event, Hex has trouble sleeping on the night of a full moon and has been obsessed with killing Koko, whom she views as a terrorist. This obsession becomes a central conflict in the Dance With Undershaft arc.
In the story, Hex operates under George Black as part of Operation Undershaft, a CIA plan to monitor and manipulate Koko. However, Hex’s personal desire to eliminate Koko puts her directly at odds with the operation’s goals. She repeatedly attempts to kill Koko, going against Black’s orders and setting into motion a chain of violent confrontations. Her role is that of a rogue agent whose single-minded focus threatens to unravel a major intelligence operation.
Key relationships define her trajectory. Her superior, George Black, is a pragmatist who values Koko as an asset, creating a critical point of tension. She also has a significant connection to R, a double agent embedded in Koko’s team. R’s loyalty is tested when Hex decides to target Jonah, Koko’s young bodyguard, in an attempt to break her emotionally. This leads to a direct confrontation where R sacrifices himself to buy time for Koko and Jonah to escape, resulting in his death at Hex’s hands.
The character experiences little redemption, instead descending further into her obsession. After killing R, Hex goes into hiding in Iraq. However, she is tracked by Koko’s organization, HCLI. Realizing her situation is hopeless as an incoming airstrike from a B-52 bomber approaches her location, Hex draws her pistol and commits suicide just before the bombs hit, an act observed by Koko’s team.
Notably, Hex is a highly skilled soldier who maintains her abilities long after leaving active military service. She prides herself on being superior to the soldiers under her command. She is adept with various weapons and, before losing her right eye during a confrontation with R in Prague, was a formidable frontline operative. At the time of her death, she wore a bandage over her lost eye.
