Description
Karen Low is a character who first appears as an antagonist before undergoing a significant shift in allegiance. Her background is rooted in a formal military career, as she is a former officer of the People's Liberation Army of China. Following her service, she became the head of security and secretary for the Chinese arms dealer Chan Guoming, a position to which she was fiercely devoted.
Karen's personality is defined by her intense professionalism, loyalty, and a deep-seated need for purpose and redemption. She idolized Chan Guoming, viewing him as the personification of combat and emulating his fighting style. This devotion meant that his death and her own defeat at the hands of Koko Hekmatyar's squad were severe psychological blows, leaving her adrift and listless. She is a capable and dangerous fighter, though her demeanor is usually cold and composed until her frustrations boil over. After being taken in by Minami Amada, Karen remains serious and efficient in her duties as a secretary and bodyguard, but she is also frequently bewildered by her new employer's eccentric and capricious nature.
Her primary motivation shifts from serving Chan to regaining her sense of worth. After being defeated and left without a master, she is found homeless in Port Elizabeth by Minami, who offers her a new role as a third secretary. Seeing no other path, Karen accepts, and her driving force becomes the successful execution of her duties for Minami, finding a new anchor for her life and skills.
In the narrative of Perfect Order, Karen's role is that of a former adversary turned ally and retainer to Minami Amada, a close associate of Koko Hekmatyar. Her introduction as an antagonist is marked by a brutal confrontation with Valmet, who recognized Karen's fighting stance as identical to that of the man who wiped out her UN peacekeeping platoon. This personal history makes their rivalry particularly charged. After her defeat and subsequent recruitment, Karen serves as a bodyguard and secretary, helping Minami with her work, chasing off corporate spies and even the CIA. Her presence also creates a recurring point of tension, as she and Valmet are forced to work in the same circle, their past conflict never fully resolved.
The character undergoes significant development, moving from a position of power and devotion to rock bottom and then to a new, more stable purpose. Her defeat by Valmet is a humbling event that shatters her previous life. Being taken in by Minami represents a second chance. While Minami is a genius physicist and roboticist, she is also scatterbrained, and Karen is often seen struggling to keep up with her whims, from chasing butterflies to traveling to the Solomon Islands. This relationship, though less intense than her devotion to Chan, provides her with a stable, if unconventional, role. Her interactions with Jonah, a child soldier working for Koko, also highlight her changed circumstances. He bluntly asks if she works for Minami now, and she acknowledges her new position, even as he reminds her that he once shot her.
Karen possesses notable combat abilities, having been trained as a military officer and serving as a bodyguard. Her trademark technique was dual-wielding pistols, specifically SIG Sauer GSRs fitted with bayonets on a Picatinny rail. However, after her decisive defeat by Valmet, she abandoned this style and switched to carrying a single GSR, later changing to a Glock 17 after she began working for Minami Amada. She is also a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, once brutally defeating one of Scarecrow's bodyguards with a series of quick strikes. Her fighting style is noted for being a direct copy of Chan Guoming's, a fact that fuels her personal conflict with Valmet.
