Description
Girag is a character who serves as one of the primary antagonists in the second half of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. He is an emperor from the Barian World, a realm that exists in opposition to the Astral World. Sent to the human world of Heartland, his primary mission is to collect the powerful Number cards to ensure the survival of his own dimension.

Before becoming a Barian, Girag lived a past life as a human warrior named Sohachi Kiraku. In that life, he was known as a wise and benevolent conqueror who shared the spoils of his victories with the common people. On the battlefield, he befriended a tanuki named Ponta, who became his loyal body double. However, this era ended in tragedy when his own vassals, secretly corrupted by the malevolent Barian deity Don Thousand, rebelled against him. Facing certain defeat, Kiraku sent Ponta away to protect him, an act the tanuki perceived as a betrayal. On his deathbed, Don Thousand implanted an Over-Hundred Number card into him, filling his heart with hatred and causing his soul to be reincarnated as a Barian Emperor, with his memories of his former life erased.

In his true form, Girag has a tall, muscular build with a distinctly alien appearance, featuring a helmet-like face and a prominent green mohawk. When disguised on Earth, he takes the form of a very tall, muscular student at Heartland Academy, wearing the school uniform. A defining feature in both forms is a lightning bolt marking on his forehead. His personality is a complex mix of fearsome warrior traits and surprisingly mundane interests. He is fearless, arrogant, and often sadistic, referring to himself with the extremely egotistical Japanese pronoun ore-sama. He enjoys intimidating others, once holding a thug and commenting that he liked his eyes because they resembled those of scared prey. Despite this menacing demeanor, Girag has a softer side. He has an infatuation with a TV pop singer named Scarlett Starling, enjoys relaxing at a bar called the BARian, and has a deep love for manga, going so far as to brainwash a manga artist and attempt to draw his own sketches, which are notably terrible. His greatest flaw is his arrogance and lack of foresight; his plans are often clever but invariably fail due to one small, overlooked detail.

Girag's role in the story is that of the first Barian Emperor to be sent on an active mission to Earth. He acts as a direct agent of the Barian World, using his powers to brainwash humans with a card called Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force, turning them into his pawns to duel Yuma Tsukumo and his friends. Unlike a straightforward villain, however, Girag is not entirely malicious. He forms a very close and loyal relationship with his fellow emperor, Alito. Girag acts as a mentor and friend to Alito, giving him romantic advice and showing genuine distress and a desire for revenge when Alito is gravely injured in battle. This bond humanizes him and makes him more than a simple enemy.

Throughout the series, Girag undergoes significant development. Initially a loyal agent of the Barian cause, his repeated failures and growing interactions with humans begin to affect him. After being severely injured and later revived by Don Thousand, he becomes more overtly malicious, even consuming the spirit of his former friend Ponta. However, this corruption is not permanent. After Alito is freed from Don Thousand's control, he is able to reach Girag and awaken his true memories of his past life as a noble human warrior. This restores Girag to his original personality, allowing him to reject Don Thousand's influence. In a final act of redemption, he sacrifices himself to save Yuma from an attack by the traitorous Vector.

As a fighter, Girag possesses numerous supernatural abilities outside of dueling, including teleportation, superhuman strength sufficient to break a television with a single stomp, and incredible endurance, as he can be punched in the face without feeling any pain. In a card game duel, his powers are strained, and the damage his monsters take is reflected onto his own body. He uses a Pressure Point Deck centered around the Hand archetype, focusing on powerful combos and Rank-Up-Magic tactics to overwhelm his opponents.
