Description
Alito is a prominent character from the second series of the anime, known as a member of the Seven Barian Emperors. Originally a human gladiator in a past life, he was reincarnated as a Barian by the villainous Don Thousand, who orchestrated his unjust execution. This tragic past is a core part of his identity, though his memories of it were sealed for much of the series.
In terms of personality, Alito stands out among his fellow Barians for his passionate and straightforward nature. He is described by others as somewhat simple or childish, but this stems from his pure and enthusiastic love for dueling. Unlike many of his peers who are cold and calculating, Alito is hot-blooded, friendly, and surprisingly human in his behavior. He develops a strong, friendly rivalry with the protagonist Yuma Tsukumo, valuing a fair and exciting duel above the Barian World's mission to collect the powerful Number cards. His passion for battle is so great that he often makes boxing-related puns, reflecting the theme of his deck. He is also shown to be initially susceptible to crushes, such as on Yuma's friend Tori, but his primary devotion remains to dueling. Later in the series, after being corrupted and brainwashed by Vector and Don Thousand, Alito's personality shifts drastically. He becomes aggressive, cruel, and obsessed with defeating Yuma, using underhanded tactics that betray his former honor as a duelist. Ultimately, he is saved by Yuma and returns to his true, passionate self.
Within the story, Alito's role evolves from a minor antagonist to a major rival and eventually a key ally. He first appears as an agent sent to Earth to collect Numbers, but his initial loss to Yuma sparks a deep respect for his opponent. He often intervenes to ensure he can face Yuma in a fair duel, even clashing with his fellow Emperors who prefer less honorable methods. His most significant character development occurs after he is fatally wounded and later resurrected by Don Thousand's power, causing him to lose his memories of his friendship with Yuma and become a puppet for the main villains. His redemption comes during a final confrontation where Yuma breaks the brainwashing, and Alito joins forces with the heroes to fight against the god of the Barian World.
Alito's key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Yuma is the most important, built on mutual respect and the sheer joy of dueling. He shares a camaraderie with fellow Emperor Girag, though he often chastises Girag for his distractions. His relationship with the treacherous Vector is one of betrayal and victimization, as Vector is directly responsible for his corruption. In his past life, he was a friend and rival to a prince, a relationship that mirrors his later friendship with Yuma.
Alito is a highly skilled boxer, both in and out of duels, able to counter attacks from much larger opponents. As a Barian, he possesses supernatural abilities including teleportation, and can transform into his true, more powerful form using a process called Barian Battlemorph. His signature dueling ability is the Chaos Draw, a Barian counterpart to Yuma's Shining Draw, which allows him to draw specific cards to turn the tide of a battle.
In combat, Alito uses a Battlin Boxer deck, a strategy heavily themed around boxing and Fire-attribute Warrior-type monsters. His playstyle is aggressive and battle-focused, utilizing counter traps and effects that power up his monsters during the Battle Phase. His key monsters include Number 105: Battlin Boxer Star Cestus and its upgraded form, Number C105: Battlin Boxer Comet Cestus, which he summons using Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force. Another crucial monster is Battlin Boxer Lead Yoke, which can protect other monsters and grow stronger when its Xyz materials are detached. His deck and dueling style perfectly embody his character: direct, passionate, and always striving for a powerful, honest fight.
