Description
Flip Turner, known in the Japanese version as Tokunosuke Omoteura, is a supporting character who attends Heartland Middle School alongside the main protagonist Yuma Tsukumo. Flip is easily identified by his round glasses, which house a built-in Duel Gazer, and his standard blue D-Pad.

Flip's background is rooted in a painful childhood experience. As a young and trusting child, he loved to duel but was frequently cheated by older children who used Ante Duels as a pretext to steal his cards under the guise of helping him improve. After overhearing their true intentions, he ran home heartbroken and swore revenge. This led him to study deception and build a new deck specifically designed for trickery. He eventually not only defeated his bullies but turned them into his lackeys, setting the foundation for his long-held belief that there is a hidden, darker side to everything and everyone.

This philosophy defines his personality, especially in his early appearances. Flip is a crafty, deceitful, and spiteful individual who employs any underhanded tactic to win. He takes pleasure in mischief, from doctoring photos to ruin Yuma's reputation to tricking a candy store owner into going out of business by spreading false rumors. His dueling style reflects his character; he favors Flip Effect Monsters, whose true power is revealed only when turned face-up, catching opponents off guard. His schemes are often elaborate, such as when he gave Yuma the card Baby Tiragon as part of a long con to steal the powerful Number 39: Utopia. Astral himself perceived a dark aura around Flip, similar to individuals possessed by Numbers, representing his deeply ingrained nature.

Flip's primary motivation throughout the story shifts from personal gain to a desire for genuine connection and strength. Initially, driven by his childhood trauma, his actions are motivated by a need to prove that he is not a victim but a master of deception. He seeks rare and powerful cards, particularly Number cards, to validate his skills and fill an emotional void caused by being used and manipulated. His defeat at the hands of Yuma, however, serves as a turning point. When Yuma returns his stolen cards and compliments his dueling ability without any hidden agenda, Flip breaks down, realizing that he has encountered someone sincere. This act of kindness leads him to reform, and he becomes a loyal, if sometimes troublesome, friend.

Flip's role in the narrative evolves from a minor antagonist to a member of Yuma's supporting friend group. After his reformation, he proves his loyalty by helping Yuma and his friends sneak backstage to find a missing person, even at the cost of his own entry. Despite this progress, Flip frequently backslides into his old, scheming ways. During the World Duel Carnival preliminaries, he attempted to cheat by trading fake melting candy for opponents' Heart Pieces, leading to his disqualification. Later, he used Yuma and his friends as a distraction to impersonate a famous duelist for his own benefit, though he shows regret afterward. These moments demonstrate that while his heart is in the right place, his old habits are hard to break. By the events of Zexal II, his role is primarily that of a comedic and supportive friend, often providing plans that are clever but morally flexible.

His key relationships are centered on Yuma Tsukumo and the spirit Astral. Yuma's unwavering and honest friendship is the catalyst for Flip's redemption, and Flip genuinely comes to care for Yuma, even tearfully building a memorial for Astral when the spirit disappears, showing his deep appreciation for his friend. He also frequently interacts with Bronk Stone and Tori Meadows, who are often exasperated by his schemes but ultimately accept him as part of their circle.

In terms of development, Flip demonstrates that a person's fundamental character does not change overnight. While he learns the value of friendship and acts selflessly, his natural inclination toward deceit remains a constant struggle, providing a realistic portrayal of someone trying to overcome a lifetime of learned behavior.

Notable abilities include his dueling expertise, which is considerable despite his reliance on trickery. He uses an Anti-Xyz Zombie deck that focuses on taking control of the opponent's Xyz Monsters for himself. His signature cards include Baby Tiragon, the trap card Ultra C which facilitates his theft of monsters, and various Flip Effect monsters like Chewbone and Flipangutan. His dueling record includes a loss to Yuma Tsukumo and a later loss to a student named Fuma during the Zexal II era. He also has a noted habit in the Japanese version of punctuating his sentences with "ura," a fragment of the word for betrayal.
