Description
Anna Kaboom, known as Anna Kozuki in the Japanese version, is a character who appears in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II. She is a spirited and powerful young Duelist who first made her presence known during the World Duel Carnival arc before continuing to play a significant role in the subsequent story.
In terms of background, Anna is a former classmate of the protagonist Yuma Tsukumo and his friend Tori Meadows from their elementary school days. During that time, she was known as a tough girl who would often fight with boys and protect bullied children. Despite her rough exterior, she had a softer side and developed a crush on a boy she knew as Yuma. Before she transferred away from the school two years prior to the main story, she tried to confess her feelings to him, but he never showed up for their meeting, leading her to feel humiliated and betrayed. However, it was later discovered that the boy she had feelings for was not Yuma Tsukumo, but another boy with a similar name, Kumo Tsuyuma. This misunderstanding fuels her initial motivations.
Anna possesses a very distinct and explosive personality. She is hotheaded, reckless, and acts on impulse, often rushing into situations without thinking them through. Her speech pattern in the Japanese version reinforces her tomboyish nature, as she uses the pronoun ore, which is typically used by males. Beneath this tough and aggressive exterior, she has a vulnerable and emotionally driven side, which often manifests as a volatile mix of love and anger, particularly toward Yuma. Her emotional powder keg nature is a defining trait; she is always on the verge of an outburst, whether it be from rage, passion, or frustration. This personality is directly reflected in her dueling style, which Astral describes as both very reckless, such as using up her entire hand in a single turn, but also surprisingly calculated, capable of pushing an opponent into a corner by the third turn.
Anna’s primary motivation for much of her early appearance is to seek revenge on Yuma for standing her up years ago. She arrives in Heartland City on the first day of the World Duel Carnival with the intent to blast him with her personal weapon. After being convinced to duel instead, she puts everything on the line. Following her loss and the revelation of her mistaken identity, her feelings become conflicted, shifting from a desire for revenge to a more complex romantic interest in Yuma, which she expresses through violence and aggression. In the events of Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II, her motivation evolves into a strong desire to protect Yuma and prove her loyalty to him, often inserting herself into dangerous situations to come to his aid.
Anna’s role in the story is that of a recurring rival and later a steadfast ally. She makes a dramatic entrance during the World Duel Carnival preliminaries by attacking Yuma with a powerful cannon. Although she was not an official participant, she later ambushed and tied up a finalist, stealing their place to infiltrate the finals just to see Yuma again. During the Duel Coaster finals, she proves to be a valuable, if reckless, ally. She arrives to save Yuma when he is ganged up on by the Fallguys, a team of duelists. Even after being cornered herself, she ultimately takes a direct attack meant for Yuma, sacrificing her place in the tournament to ensure he could advance. In Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II, she forcefully inserts herself into the Couple Duel Tournament, dragging a reluctant Yuma to be her partner so she can confront her dueling teacher, Umimi Habara.
Her key relationships are centered around Yuma Tsukumo, who is the primary target of both her ire and her affection. She is intensely possessive of him, famously declaring to a powerful enemy that they would not lay a finger on her Yuma. She also develops a respectful rivalry with the duelist Nistro, as they fought alongside each other to help Yuma. Another significant relationship is with Umimi Habara, who is revealed to be Anna's dueling master and the one who taught her how to duel.
Throughout the series, Anna shows noticeable development. She begins as a character driven purely by a personal vendetta based on a misunderstanding. After learning the truth, she still struggles to process her emotions but her goal shifts from harming Yuma to proving herself to him and protecting him. Her reckless nature becomes channeled into self-sacrificial heroism, such as when she throws herself in front of an attack for him. In her tag duel in ZEXAL II, she learns to trust Yuma as a partner, moving past her selfish tendencies to work together effectively. Her understanding of love and sacrifice deepens when she uses a card given to her by her master, called Devoted Love, which allows her to reduce her own Life Points to zero to give Yuma a chance to win, showing her ultimate act of selflessness for his sake.
Anna is also known for her notable abilities outside of dueling. She carries a powerful, collapsible cannon called the Flying Launcher, which she stores in a knapsack. This weapon can fire multiple explosive shots and can also transform into a hovercraft, which she uses for personal transportation. However, she is a clumsy pilot and frequently crashes into objects like lampposts and bridges because she does not pay attention to where she is going. In terms of dueling, her specialty is a Railway Deck that focuses on high-risk, high-reward strategies. She uses high-Level monsters like Rocket Arrow Express, which has immense power but can leave her hand empty, and powerful Xyz Monsters such as the Rank 10 Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max, which can inflict massive effect damage. Her approach perfectly mirrors her personality: overwhelming, explosive, and dangerous to both her opponent and herself.
