Description
Docteur Faker is a central antagonist in YuGiOh ZEXAL II, originally appearing as the main villain pulling the strings from the shadows. He is the founder of Heartland City and the father of two key characters, Kaito and Haruto Tenjo. His background reveals he was once a kindhearted and brilliant scientist who built Heartland as a paradise for children, but a family tragedy fundamentally changed him. To save his younger son Haruto from a fatal illness, Faker used the power of the Astral World. This experiment backfired, giving Haruto dangerous dimensionwarping abilities and trapping his soul in the Astral World. This event drove Docteur Faker to dedicate his life to a single, desperate goal destroying the Astral World in the hope that its destruction would free his son's soul. He made a pact with the sinister Barian World, agreeing to annihilate the Astral World in exchange for the power to rule the Earth and, more importantly, to save Haruto.
Docteur Faker is initially portrayed as a cruel and powerhungry figure, often appearing as a coldhearted scientist who views his own children and others as mere tools. He instructed Kaito to hunt for the powerful Number cards and used Haruto as a living weapon to bomb the Astral World, showing little regard for their wellbeing. However, this facade conceals a deeply tragic motivation. Everything Faker does, no matter how monstrous, is driven by paternal love. He willingly gave up his humanity to become a cyborglike being to gain the strength needed for his mission. His cruel demeanor is a mask for a desperate father who is himself suffering from an incurable disease and will stop at nothing to ensure his son survives. Even his pact with the Barians is a means to an end to keep Haruto alive, revealing a moral complexity where love has curdled into destructive obsession.
In the story of ZEXAL II, Docteur Faker orchestrates the World Duel Carnival as a trap to gather the Numbers he needs for his plan. He remains in the shadows, communicating through his subordinate Mr. Heartland, while Kaito acts as his primary agent. His role evolves from a distant mastermind to a direct antagonist when he confronts the protagonists. After Kaito is defeated and the Numbers are collected, Faker confronts Yuma Tsukumo, Kaito, and Reginald Kastle in a final duel within the Sphere Field, a device designed to harvest the power of the Numbers. During this confrontation, his motivations are fully revealed. He is possessed by Vector, a Barian, but ultimately overcomes the possession through his sheer will to save his son. He sacrifices himself to destroy the Sphere Field and end the threat to both worlds, redeeming his villainous actions in his final moments. His death is a pivotal, emotional moment that solidifies his role as a tragic figure.
His key relationships define his entire arc. His relationship with his son Kaito is particularly fraught. Faker manipulated Kaito by promising that collecting the Numbers would cure Haruto, leading Kaito to refer to his father as a devil. Yet, it is revealed that Faker gave up his humanity to protect the city and his family, just as Kaito does for Haruto, showing a parallel between father and son. His relationship with Haruto is the core of his motivation; Haruto is both the catalyst for his descent into villainy and his sole reason for redemption. Mr. Heartland is his untrustworthy ally who conceals Faker's terminal illness and death in the manga, while in the anime, he serves as a faithful but secondary commander. Vetrix, formerly Byron Arclight, is a man whom Faker betrayed in the past to open the portal to another dimension, creating a powerful enemy who seeks revenge against him. Finally, his relationship with Yuma Tsukumo and Astral is that of an enemy; he seeks to destroy Astral's world, but his duel with Yuma helps expose his true feelings and leads to his redemption.
Docteur Faker undergoes a significant development from a seemingly one note villain to a suffering father. Initially presented as a megalomaniac scientist, his layers are peeled back to reveal a man consumed by guilt and love. His character arc concludes with his selfawareness; he acknowledges his sins and the futility of his quest, choosing to destroy his own life's work to save his son. This transformation is complete when he entrusts the future to Yuma and his sons, recognizing that his methods were wrong.
In terms of abilities, Docteur Faker is not a duelist in the traditional sense but a master scientist and strategist. He created advanced technologies, including the Photon deck used by Kaito, the Sphere Field, and artificial life forms such as the Numbers Hunters Captain Corn, Thunder Spark, and the doll Cologne. He also possesses the ability to Soul Drive, transforming his body into a powerful, muscled android form for dueling. In this form, he is a formidable fighter, wielding a deck focused on his monster "New Orders 12: Etheric Amon" to pressure his opponents. His most notable ability, however, is his unbreakable will, which allows him to temporarily resist possession by a powerful Barian entity to protect his son.
