Description
Gauche is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL II. He is a 19-year-old duelist who initially serves as one of the primary enforcers for Mr. Heartland, acting as a committee member responsible for maintaining order during the World Duel Carnival. His name is French for "left," which signifies his role as Mr. Heartland's left-hand man, complementing his partner Droite, whose name means "right".
Gauche's backstory reveals that he and Droite grew up together as orphans in Spartan City. They found happiness in dueling and were eventually discovered and taken in by Mr. Heartland, who trained them further. Gauche underwent testing alongside other young duelists such as Kite Tenjo, which included a dangerous encounter with a malfunctioning dueling robot.
In terms of personality, Gauche is hot-blooded, high-spirited, and impulsive, which stands in stark contrast to Droite's cold and professional demeanor. He has a habit of saying "nori" in his sentences and becomes easily excited, often requiring Droite to calm him down. Despite their frequent arguments, Gauche deeply cares for his partner, demonstrated when he took an attack intended for her during a tag duel against Yuma Tsukumo. Gauche holds a strong love for dueling itself and punishes cheaters severely, sometimes banning them from Heartland City permanently. He possesses a competitive rivalry with Kite Tenjo, disliking him and wanting to defeat Yuma before Kite can.
Gauche's motivations evolve throughout the story. Initially, his primary goal as a committee member is to search for Number cards on Mr. Heartland's behalf. After dueling Yuma, he develops a friendly rivalry with the protagonist, admiring his spirit and deciding not to reveal Yuma's secret about Astral to his superiors. Gauche wants to defeat Yuma himself, considering him his "prey," and eventually resigns from his committee position specifically to enter the World Duel Carnival and face Yuma directly. Later, in ZEXAL II, his motivation shifts toward giving back to his hometown, becoming a professional duelist to inspire the children of Spartan City who faced similar hardships to his own.
Throughout the story, Gauche plays several key roles. He begins as an antagonist figure and tournament enforcer, confronting rule-breakers such as Tokunosuke Omoteura for using counterfeit Heart Pieces. After resigning from the committee, he becomes a tournament participant, advancing to the finals where he duels Yuma honorably in the underground section of the Duel Coaster. In ZEXAL II, Gauche reemerges as a professional duelist known as "Gauche the Starman," holding an undefeated win streak in Spartan City with Droite acting as his manager. He later gets brainwashed by the Barian emperor Alit using Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force but is freed during a tag duel.
Gauche's key relationships include his partnership with Droite, whom he has known since childhood. The two complement each other well in dueling despite their personality differences, and Gauche has offered to be her tag duel partner. He forms a significant rivalry-turned-friendship with Yuma Tsukumo, respecting the protagonist's dueling spirit and even giving Yuma his Excalibur card after their match as a sign of respect. His competitive relationship with Kite Tenjo remains tense, as Gauche sees Kite as a rival to surpass. Gauche also faces the Barian Alit, who brainwashes him; Gauche later seeks revenge by challenging Alit to a duel, becoming the first character to fall to Alit's Chaos Number.
Gauche demonstrates notable development across the series. He transitions from a stern enforcer to an honorable rival who values fair competition, as shown when he restored Yuma's Life Points to 4000 before their duel because he wanted a proper match. He grows from serving Mr. Heartland's agenda to forging his own path as a professional duelist dedicated to inspiring others. After being absorbed into a dimensional rift following his defeat by Alit, he is eventually resurrected alongside others after Yuma's final battle against Nash.
In terms of dueling abilities, Gauche employs two distinct decks throughout the series. Initially, he uses a Bouncer deck given to him by Mr. Heartland, featuring his ace monster Photon Streak Bouncer. When he resigns from the committee to participate in the World Duel Carnival, he switches to his true deck, a Heroic deck focused on the Heroic Champion and Heroic Challenger monster series. His primary ace monster in this deck is Heroic Champion Excalibur, which he uses to defeat opponents such as Nelson Andrews and Yuma himself.
