Description
Kotori Mizuki is a primary supporting character in Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal II, the continuation of the Zexal story. She has been Yuma Tsukumo's best friend since early childhood, with their families sharing a bond that stretches back multiple generations. As a student at Heartland Academy, Kotori is consistently seen at Yuma's side, accompanying him through his duels and adventures, even when the risks are high.

Her personality is cheerful, protective, and fiercely loyal. She deeply admires Yuma's unwavering determination and his constant drive to challenge himself, though she is occasionally exasperated by his naivety and impulsive outbursts. Behind that supportive exterior, she harbors a sincere romantic crush on him, which leads to blushing, flustered reactions, and a quiet rivalry with fellow classmate Cathy Katherine for Yuma’s attention. Kotori’s unyielding nature also manifests as a sharp, teasing side when Yuma makes mistakes, yet she never leaves his side and will go to great lengths to help him regain his hope or his Emperor’s Key when it is taken.

For much of the series, Kotori is not a duelist. Her main strengths lie in her technological aptitude and quick thinking. She has a remarkable ability to manipulate computers and analyze situations, demonstrated when she uncovers Tokunosuke’s plot to frame Yuma by tracing digital evidence. This practical intelligence makes her an essential resource in and outside of duels.

In Zexal II, Kotori’s role expands. After the intense Duel between Yuma, Kite, Shark, and Vector, she develops the ability to see Astral and speak with him directly, a significant shift that ties her even more closely to the supernatural conflicts of the story. This new sight removes the barrier that once separated her from Yuma’s otherworldly partner and deepens her involvement in the battle against the Barian forces. In this season, she also begins to duel herself. Her deck is a Fairy-type build that includes cards like Little Fairy, which can simplify Xyz Summoning, Fairy Cheer Girl, and its Chaos Xyz evolution CXyz Dark Fairy Cheer Girl. The deck also contains the trap card Icarus Attack, reflecting a possible mixed theme. While she remains an unseasoned duelist compared to the main competitors, her willingness to duel marks a step in her growth from purely supportive friend to someone capable of standing on her own when needed.

Her motivation consistently revolves around Yuma’s well-being and his personal growth. She believes in him when evidence or circumstance would cause others to doubt, and she acts as his emotional anchor. In the series finale, her feelings culminate in a direct, heartfelt confession of love to Yuma, which leaves him flustered and speechless, making her one of the few leading female characters in the franchise to openly declare her feelings without ambiguity.

Key relationships define much of Kotori’s presence. Her bond with Yuma is the story’s emotional centerpiece. She maintains a close friendship with Tetsuo Takeda and Takashi, who, along with her and Yuma, form a tight-knit circle. She also shares a warm connection with Yuma’s sister Kari and his grandmother Haru, reflecting the longstanding family friendship. A notable dynamic exists with Rio Kamishiro, whom she befriends, and with Cathy, whose mutual interest in Yuma creates a comedic but enduring competitive spark. After gaining the ability to see Astral, her interactions with him become more direct, adding a new layer to her supporting function.

Kotori Mizuki remains, by design, an ordinary person without a tragic backstory or extraordinary powers beyond her newly developed sight. Her strength lies in unwavering loyalty, technological resourcefulness, and the quiet courage to stand beside someone in constant danger. Throughout Zexal II, she evolves from a constant but unarmed companion into a slightly more active participant who can hold her own in rare duels, all while staying true to her role as Yuma’s moral compass and most devoted supporter.
