Description
Destruction God Beerus is a central figure introduced as the main antagonist in the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. As his title suggests, Beerus is the God of Destruction for the Seventh Universe, an occupation that tasks him with maintaining balance in the cosmos by destroying planets, which is necessary for creation to occur. Despite this fearsome responsibility, he does not take orders from the Supreme Kais, who are responsible for creation, and instead destroys according to his own individual judgment, which is often capricious and impulsive.

In terms of appearance, Beerus is a thin, anthropomorphic cat-like humanoid with purple skin, large pointed ears, and a long tail. His design, created by Akira Toriyama, draws inspiration from an old Cornish Rex cat, and his Egyptian-style attire of black, blue, and gold reflects influences from ancient Egyptian deities. His personality is a complex blend of divine authority and cat-like mannerisms. He is a gourmet who loves fine food, particularly fish and pudding, and he sleeps for years or even decades at a time, considering a thirty-nine-year rest as merely a nap. While he can be a terrifying god, he is also playful, polite, and surprisingly well-mannered when in a good mood, using refined Japanese pronouns. However, his mood can shift dramatically, and he is a hothead who can be easily enraged by trivial matters such as being denied dessert, losing a game, or having his sleep interrupted. This volatile temper often results in him destroying planets or anything else that displeases him without a second thought.

The primary motivation for Beerus in Battle of Gods is to find a worthy opponent. Thirty-nine years before the events of the film, the Oracle Fish prophesied that a mighty warrior known as the Super Saiyan God would appear to challenge him. After awakening from a long slumber, Beerus learns of the Saiyans who defeated Frieza and sets out to find this legendary figure. His role in the story is to act as an unstoppable force that drives the plot forward, forcing the Z Fighters to confront a power far beyond anything they have ever faced. He arrives on Earth during Bulma's birthday party, and his confrontation with the heroes is triggered not by a quest for conquest, but by an angry outburst over Majin Buu eating all the custard pudding.

Key relationships define much of his character. His most significant relationship is with his attendant and martial arts master, Whis. Whis is an angel who is not only his caretaker but also significantly more powerful than Beerus, a fact Beerus himself acknowledges. Beerus has a long, complicated history with the Saiyans. He previously ordered the destruction of Planet Vegeta due to his own displeasure with King Vegeta, an event that later shaped Vegeta's deep-seated fear and respect for him. During the party, Vegeta, who had witnessed Beerus's power as a child, humbles himself and dances for the god to protect his family and planet. It is only when Beerus slaps Bulma that Vegeta explodes in a rage, temporarily forgetting his fear and surprising even Beerus with his ferocity. Despite being the main antagonist, Beerus does not fight with pure malice. He becomes intrigued by Goku and allows the heroes time to discover the secret of the Super Saiyan God transformation. After an intense battle that threatens to destroy the universe, he ultimately spares Earth, impressed by Goku's efforts and acknowledging that Goku was the second strongest opponent he had ever faced, after Whis.

Throughout the film, Beerus demonstrates a staggering array of abilities that showcase his godly power. His base level of strength is immense, allowing him to effortlessly defeat nearly every Z Fighter, including Super Saiyan 3 Goku, with a single flick of his finger. He possesses the power to destroy entire planets and even universes; the mere clash of his fists with Super Saiyan God Goku sends shockwaves through the entire macrocosm of the Seventh Universe. Beerus has various special techniques, including the Sphere of Destruction, where he creates a massive, sun-like ball of energy to obliterate his target. His signature ability, called Hakai, is a technique of absolute destruction that can completely erase an entity, body and soul, from existence. It is revealed that Beerus was using only a fraction of his true power while fighting Goku, showing that he is on a level far above even the strongest mortal fighters. His life is also linked to the East Supreme Kai; if one dies, so does the other, creating a unique weakness for a being of his power.
