At the beginning of the film, he is training Goku on his planet when he senses the awakening of Beerus, the God of Destruction. Displaying his characteristic worry, King Kai becomes visibly agitated. When Goku asks what is wrong, King Kai explains the existence of the Gods of Destruction, deities who maintain the balance of the universe by destroying planets and life-forms, contrasting with the Kais who create. He specifically warns Goku about Beerus, describing his power as being in an entirely different dimension and cautioning Goku to show respect.

His key relationships in the film are primarily with his former student, Goku, and his awareness of the other deities. When the enthusiastic Goku expresses a desire to fight Beerus, King Kai scolds him for his foolishness, fearing for his life.
