Description
Maître Kaioh, also known as the North Kai, is a divine being who serves as the overseer and protector of the northern quadrant of the universe within the Dragon Ball cosmos. In the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, he appears as a supporting character, providing essential exposition and acting as a link between the mortal world and the higher gods. His physical appearance is distinctive: a corpulent, blue-skinned figure with a pair of antennae, sunglasses that never reveal his eyes, and a traditional Chinese-style outfit from the Qing dynasty, complete with a small hat. He resides on a tiny planet located in the afterlife at the end of Snake Way, a planet that has a gravitational pull ten times that of Earth.
His personality is characterized by a deep love for humor and comedy. He values wit so highly that he requires any prospective student to make him laugh before agreeing to train them. His own jokes are notoriously poor, and he is self‑aware of this, sometimes using them as a playful threat. Despite his comedic nature, he is wise and cautious, especially regarding threats that surpass mortal understanding. His motivations revolve around maintaining the balance of the universe, a duty shared among the four directional Kai. He acts as the mentor to several Earth‑based warriors, most notably Son Goku, whom he trained after Goku’s death against Raditz. During the events of Battle of Gods, his primary motivation is to prevent Goku from recklessly challenging Beerus, the God of Destruction, because he understands the immense disparity in power and fears the consequences.
In the story of Battle of Gods, Maître Kaioh plays a vital but secondary role. He is first seen telepathically discussing Beerus’s early awakening with the Supreme Kai and the Elder Kai. When Goku, who is training on his planet, overhears the conversation and becomes excited about fighting Beerus, Kaioh explicitly warns him that Beerus’s strength is on a completely different level and that Goku must not provoke him. Goku ignores this advice, and when Beerus and his attendant Whis arrive on Kaioh’s planet, Kaioh is present but remains in the background, watching as Goku is effortlessly defeated in two blows. After the battle, Kaioh telepathically contacts Vegeta on Earth to inform him of Goku’s defeat and to counsel Vegeta to be extremely careful and avoid angering Beerus. This early warning sets the stage for Vegeta’s desperate attempts to appease the God of Destruction during Bulma’s party. Beyond these scenes, Kaioh does not directly participate in the film’s central conflict, but his warning and telepathic communication serve as narrative catalysts that shape the protagonists’ actions.
Key relationships in the film include his bond with Goku, whom he regards as a favorite student despite Goku’s constant disregard for his prudent advice. He also has a professional relationship with the other Kai and Kaioshin, with whom he communicates telepathically to coordinate responses to cosmic threats. His attitude toward Beerus is one of deep caution and fear, as he recognizes the God of Destruction as a capricious and overwhelmingly powerful force that even the Supreme Kai dares not confront directly. While not developed heavily in Battle of Gods, his ongoing role as a mentor and cosmic observer is consistent with his earlier appearances in the series.
Notable abilities that Maître Kaioh possesses include telepathy, which allows him to communicate with anyone across the universe and even share this connection with others. He also has the power to perceive events taking place anywhere in the universe. Although he does not display combat prowess in Battle of Gods, he is the inventor of two iconic techniques: the Kaio‑ken, a technique that multiplies the user’s power at the cost of straining the body, and the Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb), which gathers energy from living beings and the environment to create a powerful sphere of energy. He taught these techniques to Goku during their training, but he himself rarely engages in direct combat. He also has the ability to materialize objects and, after his death (which occurs earlier in the series), continues to exist as a spirit in the afterlife while retaining his personality and duties. His role in Battle of Gods highlights his function as a wise but cautious adviser, whose counsel is often ignored by the more impulsive heroes.
