Jyushimatsu Matsuno is the fifth-born of the Matsuno sextuplets. His name derives from the Japanese term for the Bengalese finch, though written with kanji for "pine" and the characters for "fourteen." Early media sometimes implied he was the youngest, but recent works, particularly the 2015-2016 series, confirm him as the second-youngest brother.
Original manga settings characterized him as quiet, gentle, and reserved. Later official descriptions portrayed him as the loudest, noisiest, and most talkative sibling, with a talent for singing. Some media reconciled these by stating he possesses a quiet personality but loves to sing.
In childhood ("-kun" era), he typically wore purple as a theme color, though an April Fools' joke temporarily assigned him green. He appeared kinder, friendlier, and more thoughtful than his brothers, avoiding roughness and crying easily. Despite this, he participated in mischief like creating pitfalls or contaminating food. He was highly obedient and gullible, susceptible to coercion or easily sidetracked. He expressed insecurity about his lack of individuality, feeling his presence was the weakest and that his name was "never called first." He often possessed exactly 14 yen in savings.
During his teenage years (depicted in the "-san movie"), around ages 16 to 18, he adopted a delinquent persona to differentiate himself. This featured a constantly bitter expression, narrowed eyes, disheveled clothing (untucked shirt, unzipped pants), pretending to smoke invisible cigarettes, and exposing his buttocks. He reverted to a genuinely happy demeanor when alone. After high school graduation, influenced by interactions with his adult self, he permanently shifted to a cheerful disposition.
As an adult ("-san" era), he is the most eccentric and childlike brother. He is consistently energetic, excitable, and rarely serious, distinguished by his wide-open smiling mouth and a single cowlick. His standard attire is a yellow hoodie with stretched sleeves, blue swim shorts, and white socks (yellow slippers at home). Formally, he wears the family's shared light blue blazer and gray slacks. His personality causes difficulty blending in, leading even his brothers to speculate about hidden darkness, though Ichimatsu concluded he exists in his own "genre." He displays kindness, such as assisting Ichimatsu in finding ESP Kitty, but can become dangerously angry if provoked by cold or other triggers. He often acts illogically based on his internal whims. Annual traditions include staying up on Christmas Eve to capture Santa Claus by tying him up.
Jyushimatsu exhibits reality-warping abilities beyond his brothers, including spontaneous self-multiplication and instantaneous muscle growth.
He frequently paired with Ichimatsu during childhood mischief or group divisions, appearing together in numerous manga chapters and 1988 anime episodes. He shared notable interactions with Karamatsu, including fights over resources, and Todomatsu, collaborating in stories like "The Monthly Salary was Lost." Choromatsu once scolded him for lacking discipline during babysitting duties.
The film *Osomatsu-san ~Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu~* (2022) features Jyushimatsu as part of the sextuplets' adventure to find a legendary wish-granting fruit.
