Description
Beerus, also known as the God of Destruction of Universe 7, is a character who first appeared in the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. He is a unique force in the cosmos whose role is to maintain universal balance, not through creation, but through the selective annihilation of planets, a duty that stands in stark contrast to the Supreme Kais who are responsible for creation and preservation. Very little of his personal history is detailed, but it is known he has existed for hundreds of millions of years, during which time he was trained in martial arts by his attendant and teacher, Whis. His ancient history includes significant events such as sealing the Old Supreme Kai inside the Z Sword following an argument and destroying the original, much larger planet of North Kai. He also played a pivotal, indirect role in the series' backstory by permitting Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta, as he felt disrespected by King Vegeta, though he spared the young Prince Vegeta.
In terms of appearance, Beerus is a thin, anthropomorphic purple feline with large pointed ears and a long, whiplike tail. His design is noted to resemble a Sphynx or Cornish Rex cat and is complemented by black, blue, and gold Egyptian-inspired garments and ornamental jewelry. As a deity tasked with destruction, he is feared throughout the universe by mortals, gods, and even the wish-granting dragon Shenron. However, his personality is complex and far from one-dimensionally malevolent. Beerus is often playful, lazy, and surprisingly well-mannered when in a good mood, using notably polite pronouns in his speech. He exhibits many cat-like mannerisms, such as long periods of deep sleep, meticulous self-grooming, and a tendency to act on capricious whims.
Despite his lofty position, Beerus is easily provoked to anger over remarkably trivial matters, most commonly related to food. His identity as a gourmet is central to his motivations; the quality and presentation of meals can dictate his mood, and being denied something he desires, such as a simple cup of pudding, can trigger a violent tantrum. This seemingly contradictory nature—being a cold, planetary-level destroyer who is also a petty and spoiled eater—is a defining trait. He is not evil in a conventional sense but rather exists above such moral classifications; his destruction is a function of his role and his often selfish whims, not a personal vendetta. When he is not sleeping for years or even decades at a time, his primary desires are to eat delicious food and to find worthy opponents to fight.
In the story of Battle of Gods, Beerus serves as the main antagonist. He awakens from a 39-year slumber after receiving a vision from the Oracle Fish about a legendary warrior called the Super Saiyan God. His journey to find this warrior leads him to Earth, where he attends Bulma's birthday party. At the party, his volatile nature is on full display; he is calm and sociable until Majin Buu refuses to share the last pudding cup, at which point he effortlessly defeats nearly every hero in a fit of rage. His role in this narrative is that of an unstoppable force, forcing the heroes to scramble to create the Super Saiyan God to appease him. Ultimately, after a universe-shaking battle with Goku in that form, Beerus spares Earth, having enjoyed the fight, and reveals he was holding back a significant portion of his power.
The character’s key relationships are fundamental to his development. His twin brother, Champa, is the God of Destruction of Universe 6, and their sibling rivalry often manifests in petty squabbles and competitive tournaments. Far more significant is his dynamic with his attendant, Whis, who is not only his caretaker and cook but also his vastly more powerful martial arts master. Beerus is frequently shown being scolded or managed by Whis, adding a layer of comedy to their partnership. Another crucial but passive relationship is his life-link to the East Supreme Kai of Universe 7; if the Kai dies, so does Beerus, creating a significant vulnerability for an otherwise invincible being.
Over the course of his appearances, Beerus shows subtle development. While initially portrayed as a terrifying and unpredictable threat, his repeated interactions with the heroes of Earth, particularly Goku and Vegeta, cause his attitude to lighten. Although still arrogant and indifferent, he exhibits greater restraint and seems to develop an unexpected fondness for Earth and its people, often returning for the food and the engaging company. This development suggests a lonely being who, beneath his divine authority, craves a form of genuine connection that he cannot compel through fear.
In terms of abilities, Beerus possesses power on a cosmic scale. He is capable of casually destroying planets with a single strike and his full power is said to be capable of destroying entire universes. In his battle with Super Saiyan God Goku, the sheer force of their punches created energy ripples that threatened to tear Universe 7 apart. His signature technique is Hakai, or Destruction, which allows him to completely erase a target, including their body and soul, from existence. He has also demonstrated the use of an imperfect version of Ultra Instinct, an extremely difficult divine technique that allows the body to move and fight independently of conscious thought. Beyond raw power, his abilities include flight, energy projection, telepathy, and the ability to neutralize the energy of mortals.
