Description
Izuru Hitachi is the main protagonist of Majestic Prince and serves as the leader of Team Rabbits, a position he was assigned by Commander Simon. At sixteen years old, he pilots the all-around mecha unit designated Red 5. Izuru is a genetically engineered individual, one of the Evolved Children created to pilot the advanced AHSMB systems to defend humanity. His genetic enhancements grant him exceptionally high concentration and powerful survival instincts, which are key to his combat effectiveness. The DNA used for his creation comes from Commander Simon Gatou, making Simon his biological father, and Princess Teoria of the Wulgaru, which makes Teoria his biological mother and Izuru a half-human, half-Wulgaru hybrid. This unique heritage is believed to be a factor in his rapid mastery of the synchronization system that links a pilot to their unit. Furthermore, he shares the same paternal genetic source as his teammate Toshikazu Asagi, making the two biological brothers.
In terms of personality, Izuru is best described as a cheerful and positive thinker. His most defining trait is his open and earnest dream to become a hero, an aspiration he speaks of proudly and frequently. This idealistic goal, which he has held for as long as he can remember, often makes him the target of snide remarks and snarking from his fellow teammates. Despite this, he remains a kind and nice young man, generally being the least likely to criticize others and demonstrating fierce loyalty to those he fights alongside. Off the battlefield, Izuru has a great love for drawing manga, a hobby he pursues in almost all of his free time. However, his teammates and nearly everyone else consider him a terrible artist, and his drawings are often treated as a source of humor. His desire to be a hero and his passion for manga are so central to his identity that he can appear somewhat self-absorbed or oblivious to the world around him, including the deeper romantic feelings that his teammate Kei Kugimiya holds for him.
A notable and dangerous aspect of Izuru's personality is the shift he undergoes under extreme combat stress. As he pushes his synchronisation to its limits and his health deteriorates, he begins to display a personality that is far more confident, smooth-talking, aggressive, and cold, a stark contrast to his usual mellow self. In the most extreme cases, this state can escalate into a near-berserker rage where he risks losing his sense of self entirely. He experiences a significant personality change after a major battle where his harmonic level remains dangerously spiked, an early sign that the system he uses is slowly damaging his mind.
Izuru's primary motivation is his dream to be a hero, a concept that initially seems childish and simple. However, as the story progresses, this motivation matures. He learns from a mentor named Randy that a true hero does not fight solely for personal satisfaction or glory. A hero fights to protect others, and one cannot protect anyone if they are dead. This lesson drives his character development, teaching him to put more trust in his team and to ease up when necessary, rather than recklessly trying to single-handedly shield everyone. His journey is one of reconciling his idealistic dreams with the harsh realities of being a child soldier. This internal conflict is compounded by the revelation of his genetic origins, as the connection to Princess Teoria is something he seems to subconsciously remember, even though his memories from before entering the military academy were erased.
Within the story, Izuru is the anchor of Team Rabbits, a group of genetically engineered pilots known derisively as the "Fail Five" for their initial inability to work together. His earnest nature and growing skill as a pilot push the team forward. His key relationships include his commander and biological father, Simon Gatou, whom he strives to impress. His bond with Asagi deepens significantly once the two discover they are brothers, with Izuru affectionately calling him "Onii-chan." He shares a caring but often exasperated sibling-like dynamic with Tamaki Irie. His most pivotal personal connection is with Princess Teoria, who becomes a protective figure in his life once their biological relationship is understood.
Izuru's role in the final battle against the Wulgaru commander Jiart forces him to confront his limitations. He pushes himself to his physical and mental breaking point, fully awakening the final form of Red 5, which manifests blue wings of light and overwhelming power. This effort brings him to the brink of death, as the JURIA system has been shortening his telomeres and causing his body to age rapidly. While he survives the final encounter, he is left adrift in space and later enters a comatose state. In the subsequent movie, he is still recovering from his injuries and remains out of action for a significant period, though he is eventually entrusted with an enhanced unit called Red 5 Plus after regaining consciousness.
