Ryomen Sukuna, a human jujutsu sorcerer active over a millennium ago in Japan's Heian Era, was feared as the strongest sorcerer in history. Historical accounts labeled him an "Imaginary Demon," though he remained a curse user, not a cursed spirit. His unmatched power and brutality earned him the title "King of Curses." Upon death, his indestructible body necessitated dividing and sealing his power into twenty indestructible fingers. These fingers became special-grade cursed objects scattered across Japan, each retaining immense cursed energy capable of enhancing any curse that consumed one.
His original form presented a monstrous visage: four arms, four eyes, and a large mouth on his abdomen, all marked by distinctive black tattoos. This physique prevented wearing upper-body clothing, typically leaving his torso exposed. When incarnated within Yuji Itadori, his presence manifested as a second pair of eyes beneath the host's normal eyes and identical tattoos covering the body; Yuji's spiked hair appeared slightly pushed forward. Later, after transferring his soul into Megumi Fushiguro's body, he retained Megumi's features but displayed the same ocular alterations, tattoos, and spiked hair pushed upward. Within his innate domain, he wore traditional attire such as a light-colored kimono with a black scarf.
Sukuna's personality embodies egotism, hedonism, and sadism. He relishes mass murder, suffering, and despair, often targeting vulnerable groups like women and children. He operates without morals or long-term objectives, viewing life through a lens of social Darwinism where only the strong deserve to dominate. He openly disdains human connections, deeming love worthless and human emotions incomprehensible. Despite this, he exhibits high intelligence and strategic manipulation, coercing binding vows or feigning vulnerability to deceive opponents. He acknowledges strength in worthy adversaries, praising Jogo before killing him and expressing respect for Satoru Gojo after their battle. He maintains a rare, non-combative relationship with his subordinate Uraume, who serves him loyally. His incarnation within Yuji Itadori fuels intense, inexplicable hatred, as Yuji's idealism and mercy directly challenge his worldview. Offers of pity or compassion provoke extreme rage, perceived as insults to his strength.
His abilities stem from vast cursed energy reserves and precise control. He combines overwhelming physical prowess—strength, speed, and regeneration—with mastery of jujutsu. His primary technique involves slashing attacks, often executed without revealing full capabilities. His domain expansion, "Malevolent Shrine," uniquely lacks a barrier, allowing it to affect vast areas indiscriminately. Even with minimal fingers, he effortlessly defeated special-grade curses and sorcerers like Megumi Fushiguro. He resisted Mahito's Idle Transfiguration and dismantled his evolved form with a single attack. After incarnating in Megumi, he utilized the Ten Shadows Technique to summon and control Mahoraga, adapting it for complex battle strategies.
His resurrection occurred when Yuji Itadori consumed one finger in 2018. Trapped within Yuji, he rarely gained control until exploiting a binding vow: reviving Yuji after death in exchange for future body possession. During the Shibuya Incident, being force-fed additional fingers accelerated his resurgence. He subsequently battled Jogo, destroyed parts of Shibuya, and reclaimed Uraume. His interest in Megumi Fushiguro's potential led him to orchestrate a soul transfer into Megumi's body, exploiting Megumi's emotional vulnerability during his sister's comatose state. This transition enabled Sukuna to wield the Ten Shadows Technique. His battle against Gojo culminated in Gojo's defeat, after which he faced coordinated assaults from other sorcerers. Nearing death, he encountered Mahito in an afterlife-like space, admitting past resentment and contemplating alternative paths had he not feared the consequences of his own cursed nature. He ultimately acknowledged his loss without accepting mercy.
His mythological namesake, documented in the classical text *Nihon Shoki*, shares key traits: a dual-faced, multi-limbed entity, superhuman strength, and rebellion against authority. Both figures are portrayed as calamities—feared yet revered—with Sukuna's domain expansion visually echoing Buddhist temples tied to his folklore. This historical parallel reinforces his narrative role as an anti-authoritarian force.
