Description
Kentarou Tsubaki is a student at Suzaku High School, attending the same second-year class as the protagonist, Ryu Yamada. As a returnee who spent part of his life abroad, he initially stands out as a transfer student with a somewhat mysterious air. He is known for his distinctive green hair and eyes, and stands at a height of 168 centimeters.
At his core, Tsubaki is depicted as a character who is straightforward, positive, and good-natured, though he can come across as a little simple or bumbling at times. His most notable and endearing trait is his passion for cooking tempura, a habit he developed as an emotional outlet. He frequently retreats to the old school building to fry tempura whenever he feels dejected or troubled, making this unusual hobby a central part of his identity. This activity inadvertently becomes a major plot point, as his habit of frying in an abandoned area poses a serious fire risk, which is how he first comes into direct conflict with Yamada.
Tsubaki's primary motivation for joining the Supernatural Studies Club is twofold. He learns about the existence of witches with special powers and wants to understand more about this hidden world. More significantly, he joins because Urara Shiraishi, a girl for whom he harbors strong romantic feelings, is a member of the club. His affection for Shiraishi is a key driver of his actions early in the story. This leads to a significant incident where his desire to confess to her, combined with his habit of cooking tempura when feeling down, nearly results in a fire that future-seeing witch Maria Sarushima predicts. Yamada goes to great lengths to prevent this catastrophe, inadvertently interfering with Tsubaki’s romantic confession.
In terms of key relationships, Tsubaki shares a unique friendship with Maria Sarushima, as they are both returnee students and share that common background. While it is revealed that they have kissed before, Maria clarifies that their relationship is purely platonic, a bond formed from their similar experiences. Within the club, his dynamic is often that of a loyal but somewhat underutilized member. He participates in club activities, often seen with fellow member Miyabi Ito, and is fiercely loyal to his friends.
Throughout the story, Tsubaki's role is primarily that of a supportive secondary character. However, he has moments of significant development. When the witch powers affect the memories of students, Tsubaki also temporarily loses his memories of the witches and the club, but eventually has them restored. Although his gentle and slightly clumsy personality is his default, Tsubaki possesses a surprising and notable ability. He is, in fact, an exceptionally strong fighter, with physical combat prowess that surpasses even the delinquent-trouncing Yamada. When a situation calls for it, he can display remarkable strength.
Looking beyond his high school years, Tsubaki’s development sees him channeling his skills into a professional career. Reflecting his lifelong passion for cooking, he eventually becomes a chef, turning his emotional coping mechanism into a respectable vocation. As an adult, he appears with longer hair tied back, and he still carries a toothpick, a small echo of his high school habit of cooking tempura.
