TV-Series
Description
Meiko Ootsuka is a student at Suzaku High School and one of the seven witches, individuals who possess unique supernatural abilities. She is known for her distinctive appearance, featuring thick green hair styled into a long curl that rests over her left shoulder, and a pair of square-framed glasses. Standing at 164 cm tall, she has a gentle and unassuming look that contrasts with her more forceful inner nature.
Her personality is defined by a sharp contrast between her outward demeanor and her internal voice. On the surface, Meiko is extremely shy, soft-spoken, and socially anxious, struggling to assert herself or communicate effectively with her peers. This timidity often leads her to panic under pressure and avoid conflict. However, when she uses her witch ability, telepathy, this reserved exterior gives way to a "bossy commander-type" personality. She becomes unexpectedly confident, authoritative, and even strict, directing others with a military-like precision that has earned her the nickname "Commander Otsuka" among her friends.
Meiko's background and motivations are deeply tied to her struggles with social interaction and her passion for art. She gained her telepathic power because of her inability to speak her mind, as the school's witches are said to acquire abilities that fulfill their deepest desires. Beyond her social difficulties, she is also academically challenged, ranking near the bottom of her class alongside Ryuu Yamada. Her true passion and talent lie in drawing; she is a skilled artist and the president of the school's Manga Club, with a dream of becoming a professional manga artist.
In the story, Meiko's role is closely tied to her telepathy. Her ability activates when she kisses someone, linking the minds of everyone she has kissed, allowing them to share thoughts and images even when she is not present. This power proves useful in various situations, such as during a remedial training camp, where she orchestrates a cheating scheme with her classmates Mitsuru Kameda and Hideaki Tsurukawa. She develops a one-sided romantic affection for Ryuu Yamada, particularly when his body is inhabited by the gentle Urara Shiraishi, and she bravely kisses him to activate her power.
Her key relationships help her grow. Her interactions with Yamada and Shiraishi, along with her involvement with the other witches, gradually help her become less introverted. At one point, interference from another witch, Rika Saionji, causes Meiko to lose her memories of supernatural events, making her withdraw further from others. However, a kiss from Yamada helps restore these memories, and she continues to be an ally. Later, she is briefly manipulated into leading a campaign to recall the student council, using her influence within the cultural clubs to gather support.
Meiko undergoes notable development throughout the series. While she initially relies on her telepathy to communicate, she learns to function without it. After a ceremony conducted by Yamada removes all witch powers from the school, she loses her ability. Despite this, she accepts the loss and continues to enjoy her school life naturally, having gained confidence and genuine friendships. Her character arc culminates in her pursuing her passion professionally; ten years after the main events of the story, she has achieved her dream of becoming a successful manga artist.
