Description
Maria Sarushima is a transfer student at Suzaku High School who returns to Japan after living in America. She is one of the seven witches and possesses the power of premonition: when she kisses someone, she can see a glimpse of that person’s future from their perspective. Physically, she is a tall girl with long pink hair that she almost always wears in a ponytail secured by a yellow bow, and orange eyes. She belongs to Class 2-F and has a younger brother known for his distinctive fashion sense.
In terms of personality, Maria is outgoing, warm-hearted, and refreshingly direct. She tends to mix English into her everyday speech as a result of her time abroad. Before understanding the full consequences of her power, she was inclined to use it selfishly—for example, cheating on exams by kissing a classmate and seeing the correct answers. However, her encounter with Ryu Yamada and the Supernatural Studies Club helps her recognize the negative side of her ability. She develops clear romantic feelings for Yamada and often initiates kisses both to express her affection and to put her power to use.
Maria’s central motivation is shaped by a disturbing vision she receives: she foresees herself causing a fire that destroys the old school building. Horrified by this possibility, she stops attending school in an attempt to prevent the prophecy from coming true. Yamada and his friends learn about her situation and work to help her confront the vision and find a way to change the outcome, demonstrating that the future she saw is not fixed.
Within the story, Maria serves as the second witch in the sequence associated with Rika Saionji’s set. Her role involves contributing her precognitive ability to solve mysteries around the school, particularly the events tied to the old schoolhouse. She also becomes a key ally of Yamada and a member of the expanded supernatural studies group.
Her relationships with other characters are significant. Her affection for Yamada is mutual on her side, though he remains primarily committed to Urara Shiraishi. Maria’s friendship with the other witches and club members grows over time, and she is openly supportive even when her own feelings are complicated. She also has a connection with Rika Saionji, who provides information about her and helps prevent the fire incident.
Over the course of the series, Maria undergoes clear personal development. She evolves from a self-serving user of her power into someone who tries to use it responsibly and for the benefit of others. Her decision to face her own vision instead of hiding from it marks a turning point. Eventually, she loses her premonition ability, but she adapts and pursues a career as a model and fashion designer, showing that her identity is not defined solely by her power.
Maria’s notable ability is premonition, which is both a blessing and a burden. It gives her insight into future events, but also forces her to grapple with knowledge she cannot easily change. The power is activated only through physical contact via a kiss, and the visions are brief but specific. Her ability to see cause and effect from another person’s vantage point makes her a valuable asset for anticipating and avoiding dangers, though the emotional weight of that foresight also drives much of her personal struggle.
