Description
Kōichirō Iketani is the leader of the Akina SpeedStars, a local street racing team based on Mount Akina. He works at a gas station in Shibukawa alongside Takumi Fujiwara and Itsuki Takeuchi, and it is through his invitation that the two become involved in the region's racing scene. Iketani drives a lime green 1988 Nissan Silvia K's S13, a car he maintains with pride and handles with a developing skill set.
In terms of personality, Iketani is passionate about cars and racing, and he takes his role as team leader seriously. He is well-meaning, friendly, and supportive, often acting as a mentor to the younger members. However, he is not a highly accomplished driver; his technique is modest, and he initially struggles with basic drifting and becomes nervous when the car begins to skid. He works on improving through methods such as the back‑brake skid and gradually overcomes his fear of losing control. Iketani can be somewhat dense in romantic matters, as shown by his awkward relationship with Mako Sato, and he tends to jump to conclusions, though he learns from his mistakes and tries to remain calm under pressure.
His primary motivations stem from a deep loyalty to his team and a desire to protect and support his friends. He takes pride in the SpeedStars and wants to see them succeed, even though his own driving abilities are limited compared to prodigies like Takumi. Iketani is driven by a genuine love for cars and street racing, and he uses his knowledge of vehicles and local roads to help guide others.
Within the events of New Initial D the Movie Battle Digest, which compiles highlights from the Legend trilogy, Iketani serves as a catalyst for the story. He is the first to witness the mysterious AE86 outrun Keisuke Takahashi, and later he brings Takumi and Itsuki to the SpeedStars meet where the Akagi RedSuns issue a challenge. During practice, Iketani loses control of his Silvia and crashes, leading him to seek help from Bunta Fujiwara, the owner of the tofu shop. Though Bunta declines to race, Iketani's desperation indirectly sets the stage for Takumi to take the wheel. After the NightKids incident, Iketani's repaired car is ambushed by Shingo Shoji, which leads to the duct‑tape death match against Takumi. Throughout these events, Iketani remains an earnest and supportive figure, always putting the team's interests first.
Key relationships define Iketani's role. He is a senior figure and the de facto leader for Takumi and Itsuki, who often call him senpai. He respects his boss Yuichi Tachibana, who provides advice and reveals the identity of the AE86 driver. His interactions with Mako Sato highlight his romantic insecurities and contribute to his personal growth. While he never reaches the competitive heights of the main racers, Iketani's steady presence and dedication provide stability for the SpeedStars.
Over time, Iketani shows subtle development. He becomes more confident behind the wheel and more knowledgeable about tuning and race strategy. In the longer arc of the series and its sequel MF Ghost, he eventually becomes a gas station manager, still single and balding, but retaining his connection to the racing world. His character embodies perseverance, teamwork, and the value of being a supportive secondary figure.
Notable abilities include his practical knowledge of cars, his ability to lead and organize a small team, and a driving style that relies on persistence rather than raw talent. He is familiar with the Akina passes and can hold his own against less skilled opponents, though he is outclassed by top‑tier drivers. His Silvia is equipped with a CA18DET turbocharged engine, and he takes care to maintain and improve it. Iketani's real strength lies in his role as a facilitator and caretaker of the local street‑racing culture.
