Description
Lionet Sōma is a 14-year-old Bronze Saint of the Lionet constellation in the generation of Saints that follows the legendary Pegasus Seiya. He comes from a background of tragedy: his father, Kazuma, was a Silver Saint of the Southern Cross who was murdered by the Martian warrior Sonia when Sōma was a child. Arriving only after the deed was done, Sōma carried the memory of a masked woman standing over his father’s body, and this event planted a deep desire for vengeance that would define much of his early journey.
Sōma’s personality is outwardly bright and cheerful. He is easygoing and often maintains a lighthearted attitude even in serious situations, which can make him seem aloof to those around him. He treats his companions with a mature, almost older-brother-like demeanor. However, this sunny exterior hides a volatile temper. When pushed to his limit, Sōma can become uncontrollably enraged, losing his calm and lashing out with raw emotion. This volatility is a key aspect of his character, stemming from both his fiery nature and the unresolved pain of his father’s death.
His primary motivation at the start of the story is to avenge his father by defeating Sonia. As he grows closer to his fellow Saints, especially Pegasus Kōga, that focus expands. He comes to value the protection of his friends and the goddess Athena above his personal grudge. Over the course of the series, Sōma matures from a revenge-driven youth into a dependable warrior and mentor. After the war against Mars, he helps rebuild the training ground known as Palaistra and serves as an instructor for new Saint candidates, passing on his skills and experience. When the threat of the Pallasites emerges, he leaves his teaching post and returns to active combat, demonstrating his commitment to protecting others.
Sōma is one of the first allies Kōga meets on his journey, and the two quickly become close friends. He also forms a strong bond with Aquila Yuna, whom he meets upon entering Palaistra, and with the other main Bronze Saints: Dragon Ryūhō and Wolf Haruto. His rivalry with Sonia evolves as he learns more about her and the circumstances of his father’s death, eventually leading him to move past pure hatred. His relationships with his friends help soften his more violent impulses and encourage his growth.
As a Saint, Sōma wields the element of fire. His signature techniques include Flame Desperado, a close-range flaming punch, and Lionet Burning Fire, a projectile of concentrated fire released from his body. He also uses attacks such as Lionet Flare Storm Bomber and Lionet Burst Flame Bomber, which combine his fire power with physical strikes. His Cloth was once worn by a previous Lionet Saint named Ban, and he later learns a technique originally used by Ban from the former Unicorn Saint Jabu. In battle, Sōma is aggressive and direct, channeling his fiery cosmo into powerful offensive moves. His development as a fighter is matched by his growth in self-control, allowing him to channel his anger constructively rather than let it consume him.
