Description
Ionia de Capricórnio is the Gold Saint of the Capricorn constellation in the anime Saint Seiya Omega. He is an extraordinarily ancient warrior, having lived for over eight hundred years and participated in at least four separate Holy Wars across different eras as the protector of the goddess Athena. Despite his immense age, he maintains a tall, muscular, and imposing physique, though his appearance clearly shows his seniority through his long white hair, matching beard, and facial wrinkles. Before the main events of the story, Ionia had retired from active duty as a frontline Gold Saint and became a teacher, training the next generation of Saints. During this period, he experienced a profound personal crisis: he killed his own students when they rebelled against the grueling training he imposed, which he saw as a necessary failure of their devotion to Athena. Overcome with guilt for this act, he voluntarily imprisoned himself. He was later freed by the goddess Athena, Saori Kido, who not only pardoned him but reinstated him as the Capricorn Gold Saint and appointed him as the principal of the Palaestra, the prestigious school where young Saints are trained.

As a character, Ionia is defined by his immense wisdom and intellect, often referring to himself as the master of all knowledge. He embodies the virtues of knowledge and will, presenting a calm, dignified, and authoritative figure who commands deep respect from his students. However, his devotion to Athena has become twisted by his long life. Having witnessed the countless trials, pain, and suffering that the goddess endures with each reincarnation to protect humanity, his motivation shifts from direct loyalty to a desire to end her cycle of pain. He comes to believe that the only true way to save Athena is to prevent her from suffering any further, even if that means betraying her and siding with the war god, Mars. Under the influence of Medea, Mars's sister, Ionia agrees to support Mars's plan to create a new world, viewing it as a form of liberation for the goddess. In his role as principal, he secretly betrays the sanctuary by sending the Saints trained at the Palaestra to serve Mars and imprisoning or eliminating any who resisted or discovered his plot, such as the Wolf Saint, Haruto.

Within the story of Omega, Ionia serves as the primary antagonist of the Palaestra arc and later as the guardian of the Capricorn Temple in the new Sanctuary built by Mars. He is revealed to be a traitor at the heart of the Saints' training ground, manipulating a tournament to distract and weaken the Bronze Saints. He later acts as the custodian of the false Athena, Aria, using her light-based cosmos to further Mars's agenda. One of his most significant acts is recruiting the future Gold Saint, Harbinger of Taurus, into Mars's army by offering him greater power. His key relationship is with Saori Kido, the reincarnation of Athena he has served for centuries. His deep, genuine love for her is the very source of his betrayal, creating a tragic irony. His other crucial relationship is with the protagonist, Pegasus Kouga, whom he first easily defeats to demonstrate the absolute gap between Bronze and Gold Saints. He later faces Kouga in his temple, seeking to force Kouga to embrace his own Dark Cosmos to prove the futility of light.

In terms of development, Ionia undergoes a final, tragic reversal. After a long and complex life of service, sin, self-imprisonment, and misguided betrayal, his end comes not from being overpowered, but from a change of heart. When fighting Kouga in the Capricorn Temple, he uses his primary ability, Domination Language, which allows him to command any target and even control reality with his words. He also uses a self-directed version of this power called Rejuvenation, which drains the energy from his mystical Book of Obedience to temporarily restore his body to its prime, granting him immense physical strength and speed. In this rejuvenated state, he unleashes his ultimate physical technique, the Capricorn Horn, a series of near-unstoppable, light-speed punches capable of stripping away an opponent's five senses. However, when Kouga awakens the Seventh Sense, a power born from the will to protect, Ionia senses the combined divine cosmos of Saori Kido and Aria. Realizing the true light of Athena still shines, he willingly stops fighting and lowers his defenses, allowing himself to be struck by Kouga's Pegasus Comet. He dies content, finally accepting that true salvation for his goddess lies not in ending her cycle, but in the new generation of Saints fighting to protect her light.

His notable abilities are unique among Gold Saints, blending physical power with almost magical linguistic control. His signature technique, Domination Language or Lumination Language, is a form of powerful speech that can command absolute obedience from a target, forcing them to halt their attacks, move against their will, or even attack their own allies. By using this on himself with the phrase Youth Force, he can revert his physical body to a younger, stronger state. While rejuvenated, his eyes glow white, his hair returns to black, and he can perform the Capricorn Horn, a devastating rush of punches that surpasses ordinary light-speed strikes. He is a master of the Wind element and is noted by the Pisces Gold Saint, Amor, to be the strongest of the Gold Saints serving Mars. Despite his long lineage as a Capricorn Saint, he notably cannot use the legendary Excalibur technique, having developed his unique speech-based abilities during his long imprisonment.
