Description
Arashi Mikami is the main protagonist of Triage X, a seventeen-year-old high school student who operates as a key member of the secret vigilante organization known as Black Label. He has a lean, athletic build and stands 175 centimeters tall, with short, spiky brown hair and brown or silver eyes. Beneath his clothing, his body is covered in extensive scars from a life-saving surgery he underwent as a child, though his face remains unmarked. When on missions, he wears a black, bulletproof motorcycle helmet that conceals his entire head, along with a red and black armored suit that offers protection from gunfire.
Arashi's past is defined by a single catastrophic event. When he was eight years old, he attended the Tabioka Medical Conference with his best friend, Ryuu Mochizuki. A terrorist bombing occurred, and Arashi instinctively used his own body to shield Ryuu. Arashi suffered critical, near-fatal injuries, while Ryuu emerged physically unharmed but with severe head trauma that left him brain dead. Ryuu's father, Dr. Masamune Mochizuki, made the extraordinary decision to apply his own concept of triage to his son, declaring him beyond saving. He then surgically transplanted Ryuu's arms, legs, and heart into Arashi's body to keep the boy alive. Arashi thus carries the physical parts of his deceased friend with him, a reality that instills in him a profound sense of guilt and an unshakable debt of loyalty to Dr. Mochizuki.
In terms of personality, Arashi is handsome but socially awkward and introspective. He often appears distant or lost in thought, frequently engaging in internal dialogues with the memory of his deceased friend as he tries to process his own actions and the motives of others. At school, this makes him seem aloof or prone to dozing off, and he shows little interest in the typical social pursuits of his peers. He is not particularly conscious of the feelings of those around him, such as the romantic interest his partner Mikoto Kiba shows him. However, this reserved exterior masks a deep well of determination and a fierce loyalty to the members of Black Label, whom he considers his family. When his surrogate sister Sayo Hitsugi is severely injured, his immediate reaction is a desire for vengeance, revealing the intensity of his emotions.
Arashi's role in the story is as the primary field operative of Team Ampoule One, the main execution unit of Black Label. The organization, based out of Mochizuki General Hospital, operates on a medical metaphor: society is a body, and incorrigible criminals are cancerous tumors that must be excised. Dr. Mochizuki assigns a black label to these targets, and it is Arashi's duty to carry out the elimination. He is partnered most frequently with Mikoto Kiba, a skilled motorcycle rider and fighter who is clearly devoted to him. Other key relationships include his guardian Sayo Hitsugi, the intelligence analyst and sniper for the team, and Oriha Nashida, the group's young explosives expert. His relationship with Dr. Mochizuki is the most complex; while he feels immense gratitude and loyalty towards the man who saved his life, he also represents the living legacy of the doctor's lost son, a burden Arashi carries silently.
Throughout the story, Arashi's development centers on his struggle to reconcile his violent duty with his own conscience. He does not kill for pleasure but follows a personal code to make his actions as quick and painless as possible, typically aiming for a head shot. He constantly questions the morality of his role and his own right to live, given that his life was extended at the cost of his friend's. Over time, he learns to accept his situation and the purpose Dr. Mochizuki has given him, channeling his guilt into a resolve to protect the city and the people he cares about. His evolution is less about changing who he is and more about coming to terms with his traumatic past and finding a reason to move forward within the violent world he inhabits.
Notably, Arashi is a highly capable combatant with several specialized abilities. He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, possessing physical strength far above an average person due to years of rigorous training to recover from his childhood injuries. He is also an expert marksman and proficient with a variety of firearms. His primary weapon is a custom longslide.45 caliber pistol called the Long Slide. For emergencies, he carries a smaller.45 caliber backup pistol named the Knuckle. His signature weapon is the Double Joker, a custom double-barreled, sawed-off shotgun that he can load with either lethal buckshot or non-lethal rubber shells. He has trained himself to distinguish between the two types of shells by weight alone, allowing him to react instantly and apply the appropriate level of force for any given situation.
