Description
Captain Kobayashi is the commanding officer of the generational seed ship Sidonia, a vessel carrying the remnants of humanity fleeing from the alien Gauna. Her personal name is not revealed, and she is consistently referred to only by her surname. She is one of the few surviving original crew members from an encounter where humanity first defeated a Gauna, an event that took place over six hundred years before the main story. As a result of biological treatments developed around that time, she has achieved biological immortality, which has preserved her youthful appearance despite her immense age. Her high rank and position are denoted by a distinctive mask that she wears during her official duties, a symbol that also serves to conceal her ageless face from the general populace.
In terms of personality, Captain Kobayashi is defined by a stoic, pragmatic, and deeply rational mindset. Her leadership style is militaristic and utilitarian, prioritizing the long-term survival of the human species above all else. This often leads her to make harsh, detached decisions, such as abandoning pilots in the midst of battle, sacrificing entire sections of the ship, or authorizing the use of hazardous experimental technology if it serves the greater strategic goal. Despite this cold exterior, she is not without personal indulgences. Her only known hobby is to disguise herself with different hairstyles and clothing to blend in with the ordinary crew, taking on roles such as a nurse or a restaurant clerk as a way to anonymously observe shipboard life.
Her primary motivation is the survival and expansion of humanity. She is committed to Sidonia's original mission of finding a habitable star system and is determined to destroy the Gauna, a species she views as an existential threat. This unwavering focus on her mission has shaped her key relationships. She was once close to Hiroki Saito, another legendary pilot and immortal survivor from the same era. Their relationship fractured when she forcibly extended his immortality against his wishes, prioritizing his continued service to Sidonia over his personal desire for an end to his long life. Following Saito's disappearance, she became the legal guardian of his clone, the series protagonist Nagate Tanikaze. Her decision is partly motivated by sympathy but also by the cold calculation that she can harness his loyalty and exceptional piloting skills for Sidonia's defense.
Throughout the story, her role evolves. She begins as the secretive and absolute leader who, alongside the Immortal Ship Committee, makes all critical decisions. The committee was originally composed of key personnel granted immortality to secure the ship's voyage, but over the centuries it expanded and many members became corrupt and politically self-serving. Approximately one hundred years before the main events, she consolidated her authority by executing dissenting committee members who opposed her leadership, leaving only a handful of active immortals. Later, when the remaining committee attempts to remove her for her aggressive tactics against a massive Gauna hive ship, she preemptively purges them, dissolving the council and establishing herself as an undisputed dictator.
This event marks a turning point in her development. She begins to delegate more tactical command authority to the prodigy Yuhata Midorikawa, showing a willingness to step back from direct control. In a conversation with Nagate Tanikaze, she reveals a deep weariness and skepticism about the nature of her endless life, suggesting a long-held exhaustion that she has finally begun to address. After the final battle and the successful colonization of a new star system, she hands over the position of captain to Midorikawa Yuhata, choosing to remain on the planet while Sidonia departs on a new voyage, finally allowing herself a rest from her centuries of command.
