Description
Ichiro Seii is a senior guardian pilot serving aboard the seed ship Sidonia. Initially, he holds the crucial positions of executive officer and battle commander aide to Captain Kobayashi, working from the Combat Information Center to delegate officers and secure the captain's approval for major tactical decisions during military operations. As an instructor at the Sidonia Defense Force academy, he teaches courses on tactics and Gauna-related subjects, playing a direct role in training future generations of guardians. He is recognized as one of the top pilots aboard the ship and is one of the few to have survived the 5th Gauna Defense War.
In terms of personality, Seii is generally a composed and cautious individual who pays close attention to events and the people around him. He is also notably brave in combat, willing to risk his own life to protect Sidonia and its people. His tactical approach favors direct engagement, a style that frequently leads to heated arguments and clashes with Captain Kobayashi over strategy. Despite being a decent tactician, Seii demonstrates self-awareness and humility, recognizing that others are better suited for the executive officer role; he eventually steps down from his command post, recommending the talented young Yuhata Midorikawa as his successor.
Seii's motivations are rooted in the protection and survival of Sidonia. This drive is evident in his extensive combat history, most notably during the assault on the Large Mass Union Ship. In that critical engagement, his squad, designated unit 026, suffered devastating losses with 38 out of 48 pilots perishing, yet they succeeded in eliminating over 200 Gauna and saving the ship. His early career was marked by a moment of fear-induced paralysis during a first encounter with Gauna 487 on a mining mission, an event that caused him horror at the ensuing casualty reports, though his subsequent assistance in executing a diagonal acceleration maneuver prevented even greater losses.
Seii's role in the story evolves from a command figure to a front-line pilot. After transitioning to a full-time gardes pilot, he becomes a mentor to the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze, helping to refine the young pilot's distinctive fighting technique with the Tsugumori Garde. His key relationship with Nagate is that of an experienced veteran assisting and guiding a promising but unconventional new pilot. Another significant relationship develops with fellow pilot Samari Ittan. Seii is the source of an early rumor claiming Samari would "photosynthesize" with high-performing male pilots to boost morale, an interaction that hints at a deeper connection. This eventually evolves into a genuine relationship, and the two have several children together.
Seii is physically described as a tall man with white hair and blue eyes. He initially wears the standard Sidonia crew uniform but later dons a form-fitting pilot suit. In the original manga, he is depicted wearing a vintage helmet that covers most of his face. His notable abilities include his high-level piloting skills, which place him among the ship's elite, his strategic and tactical acumen from his time as executive officer, and his capability as an instructor and mentor to younger pilots.
