Description
Norio Kunato is a Garde pilot and the heir to Kunato Developments, one of the major defense industries aboard the generation ship Sidonia. As the ninth eldest son of the Kunato family, he was raised with immense pressure to excel and uphold his family's prestigious reputation. From childhood, Kunato trained rigorously on a Tsugumori combat simulator, honing his piloting skills with the ambition of one day piloting the legendary Garde himself and becoming Sidonia's next great savior. He consistently ranked first during pilot training and was widely regarded as the top cadet of his cohort, a position that fueled his pride and arrogance.
Kunato's personality is marked by a cold, reserved, and often condescending demeanor. He holds little respect for those he considers beneath him, particularly his fellow trainees, and initially views Nagate Tanikaze—a mysterious newcomer who earns the legendary Tsugumori—with contempt and rivalry. Kunato is intensely proud of his heritage and his own abilities, and he discriminates against those he sees as sub-human, including Nagate and the gender-fluid pilot Izana Shinatose. His motivation is driven by a desire for fame, glory, and recognition, as well as a deep-seated need to prove himself worthy of his family's legacy.
Throughout the story, Kunato's role as both a skilled pilot and an antagonist gradually evolves. He initially serves as a foil to Nagate, embodying elitism and entitlement. However, after a critical event in which he falls under the control of the manipulative scientist Ochiai, Kunato barely survives and emerges with no memory of that period. Stripped of his former arrogance, he returns to piloting with a more subdued attitude. He is later entrusted with the Tsugumori Custom 2, a modified Garde built from the same lineage as Nagate's original machine, symbolizing his redemption and newfound responsibility.
Key relationships shape Kunato's development. His rivalry with Nagate is central, born from jealousy and a sense of entitlement, but it gradually transforms into a grudging mutual respect as they fight side by side against the Gauna. His interactions with Izana Shinatose also become significant; despite his initial disdain, he develops a deeper connection with her, which helps him open up and reveal a more compassionate side. Kunato's relationship with his family, particularly the weight of being the heir, remains a constant undercurrent that drives his actions.
In terms of abilities, Kunato is an exceptionally talented Garde pilot, with simulation scores that rival even Nagate's. His extensive childhood training on the Tsugumori simulator gives him an intuitive understanding of combat maneuvers and tactics. He is courageous and determined in battle, willing to risk his life to protect Sidonia. After his recovery and redemption, he becomes a reliable and capable warrior, able to pilot the advanced Tsugumori Custom 2 effectively. His character arc moves from prideful elitism to humble service, ultimately earning him a place as a trusted defender of humanity.
