Description
Hinata Momose is a senior pilot serving aboard the seed ship Sidonia, where she holds the rank of the second-highest scoring pilot with the call number 002. As a member of the elite Akai squad, she is recognized as one of the top four most skilled Garde pilots on the ship during the hundred-year period of peace prior to the story's main events.
In terms of personality, Hinata presents herself as kind and friendly, though she tends to be reserved and primarily interacts only with her own squad members and the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze. Her demeanor in social settings is approachable, but she maintains a distinct boundary between her close circle and others.
Hinata's motivations are closely tied to her role as a pilot and her personal relationships. She is romantically involved with her squad leader, Mochikuni Akai, and the two share a bond deep enough that they spend time alone together in private locations such as the seaside. This relationship becomes the central driving force behind her actions during a critical encounter with a Gauna, the primary antagonistic force in her world.
Her role in the narrative is significant as a cautionary figure. When Gauna 487 launches the first attack against Sidonia after a century of peace, the Akai squad is dispatched to eliminate the threat. The mission initially proceeds smoothly, but when Hinata's Garde unit becomes entangled by the Gauna's tentacles, her lover Akai moves to rescue her. He successfully frees her, but his actions leave his own unit vulnerable, and he is killed by the enemy. This loss proves catastrophic for the mission. Overcome by grief and emotional instability, Hinata disregards the coordinated plan being formulated by her remaining squadmates and charges directly at the Gauna. Her reckless charge forces the other pilots to follow in an attempt to save her, resulting in the deaths of the entire squadron, including her own. Ultimately, having sustained fatal physical trauma during the battle, Hinata dies of cardiopulmonary arrest. Her emotional breakdown and the subsequent loss of the entire elite squadron also cost Sidonia an invaluable Kabizashi spear, a crucial weapon against the Gauna.
Key relationships define her character arc. Beyond her intimate bond with Mochikuni Akai, she is comrades with the other top pilots of the era, Kashiwade Aoki and Izumo Midorikawa. Her development is tragically brief; she does not undergo a redemptive or maturing arc but instead succumbs to her human emotions at a critical moment. The promising, elite pilot is undone by personal loss, and her final actions demonstrate how grief can override training, discipline, and strategic thinking.
In terms of abilities, Hinata is unequivocally one of the most accomplished Garde pilots of her generation. She graduated as a high-ranking cadet and achieved her elite status through skill and merit. However, her abilities, along with those of the other elite pilots of the peace period, are shown to be insufficient when faced with the cunning and deadly nature of a genuine Gauna threat, a challenge that Nagate Tanikaze later proves able to overcome.
