Movie
Description
Kashiwade Aoki is a senior Garde pilot serving aboard the seed ship Sidonia. He is a member of the Akai squad, an elite unit consisting of the ship’s most skilled combatants, where he serves under the squad's leader, Mochikuni Akai. His call number is 003, marking him as the third highest ranking pilot on the vessel. Physically, Aoki is a tall man with short, dark hair.
Aoki is depicted as a good-natured individual and a capable soldier. He maintains a calm professionalism and shows a sense of camaraderie with his fellow squad members. During the Gravity Festival, an annual event featuring a fighting tournament among pilots, Aoki is shown to be in top form, easily defeating his opponent Koichi Tsuruuchi. He is part of the group of elite pilots who approach the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze, to learn about his experience fighting a Gauna, indicating a practical interest in improving their own combat effectiveness. Aoki is optimistic by nature, famously expressing confidence in his squad's victory over the powerful Gauna designated 487.
In the story, Aoki and his squad are assigned the critical mission of destroying Gauna 487, a powerful enemy that has reappeared and is approaching Sidonia. Before sortieing for this deadly mission, Aoki, along with the rest of his team, briefly interacts with Nagate and his friend Izana Shinatose, inviting them for a ride inside one of Sidonia's massive seawater reservoirs. This moment highlights his role as one of the accessible, though senior, pilots on the ship. The mission itself ends in catastrophe. While the squad initially performs well, the death of their leader, Akai, causes the team to fall into disarray. Aoki continues to fight, but his squadmate Hinata Momose, emotionally compromised by Akai’s death, abandons the plan and charges at the Gauna. As Aoki and the remaining pilot, Izumo Midorikawa, attempt to save her, they are both killed by the Gauna’s tentacles. Aoki’s death is not explicitly shown on screen, but his final screams are heard, confirming his demise. He and the rest of the Akai squad are later mourned by the crew of Sidonia.
Throughout his brief appearance, Aoki undergoes little personal development, as his role is primarily to demonstrate the immense threat posed by the Gauna and the high cost of failure in Sidonia's war for survival. His primary relationships are with his comrades in the Akai squad, specifically with Mochikuni Akai, Hinata Momose, and Izumo Midorikawa, with whom he trains and fights. As an elite pilot, Aoki possesses considerable combat abilities. His ranking and his performance in the Gravity Festival tournament confirm his status as one of the best pilots on Sidonia, skilled enough to be entrusted with the most dangerous missions.
