Description
Khajiit Dale Badantel is a character from the secret organization known as Zurrernorn, where he holds the rank of one of the "Twelve High Disciples". His entire existence is defined by a single, overwhelming tragedy from his childhood. He was born in a village, and as a young boy, his mother died from a brain hemorrhage. Because he was not home at the time and missed the chance to see her one last time, he was consumed by a powerful sense of guilt and blamed himself for her death. This trauma became the core of his identity and drove him to dedicate his life to a single goal: finding a way to resurrect her.
His initial studies into magic led him to a crushing realization. The existing resurrection magic of the fifth tier, which he sought to learn, requires a significant amount of life force from the target to work. His mother, an ordinary peasant woman with no magical power or levels, simply did not possess the necessary vitality to be brought back. This obstacle did not discourage him; instead, it warped his ambition. He abandoned his faith and grew to despise his baptismal name, Dale, as it represented the religion and humanity he was leaving behind. Concluding that a human lifespan was far too short to invent a new form of resurrection magic, he resolved to abandon his humanity entirely and transform himself into an undead being, granting himself an eternity of research time.
Physically, Khajiit is a reflection of his corrupt path. Although his actual age is around forty, he appears as a withered, mummified figure. He is completely bald, with a skeletal frame, sunken eyes, and jaundiced, parchment-like skin stretched tight over his bones. This ghastly appearance is the result of his prolonged exposure to negative energy, the corrupt force of death that necromancers manipulate, and it makes him look more like a living corpse than a living man. His personality is as decaying as his body. He is highly calculating and cunning, having meticulously planned his operations for years, but his obsession has stripped him of all empathy and morality. He is ruthless and will sacrifice anyone to achieve his goal, using others as mere tools for his grand experiment. His sanity has been further eroded by the influence of a powerful magical artifact, the Death Orb, which he relies on and which subtly twists his mind without his awareness.
Khajiit's primary motivation and his main role in the story are one and the same: the recreation of a ritual known as the Death Spiral. This is a grand, forbidden ceremony designed to generate a colossal wave of negative energy by slaughtering an entire city's population. He planned to use this energy for two purposes: to complete his own transformation into a powerful undead, and to gather the necessary resources to eventually resurrect his mother. To this end, he spent five years secretly operating from the large public cemetery of the city of E-Rantel, slowly preparing the magical foundations for his ritual. He allied with Clementine, a fellow, albeit much more combat-oriented, member of Zurrernorn, to help with the more violent aspects of the plan, such as kidnapping the talented young potion-maker Nfirea Bareare to serve as a component. Khajiit found Clementine insane and distrusted her methods, but he acknowledged her superior martial skill, estimating his chances of beating her in a fight at only thirty percent even with his magic.
In terms of abilities, Khajiit is a pure specialist in necromancy. His personal combat power is not exceptionally high, but his strength lies in his ability to command a legion of the dead. Normally, he can control over one hundred low-tier undead, such as skeletons and zombies. When augmented by the Death Orb, a sentient, powerful magic item, his control can extend to over one hundred and fifty. His most potent offensive summons are two Skeletal Dragons, which he considers his ultimate trump cards because they are immune to all magic below the sixth tier. He wielded a Shadow Wand as his primary focus, and his arsenal of spells included Acid Javelin, Corpse Flame, and various rays of negative energy.
His development and story arc conclude with the failure of his grand plan. As he was in the final stages of the ritual, he was confronted by the adventurers Momon and Nabe, who were actually the undead king Ainz Ooal Gown and his guardian Narberal Gamma. Confident in his power, Khajiit engaged Narberal in battle. However, his confidence was shattered when Ainz ordered Narberal to stop holding back. She revealed her true, monstrous power and cast a seventh-tier spell, the "Maximize Magic — Chain Dragon Lightning," which instantly incinerated both of his magic-immune Skeletal Dragons and then struck him down. In his final moments, stripped of his plans and powers, his last, fleeting thought was not of revenge or of his research, but of his mother as he whispered, "Mama". Following his death, the Kingdom of Re-Estize took possession of his body for investigation, but it mysteriously vanished from the morgue shortly after. Ainz speculated that the leadership of Zurrernorn may have retrieved and resurrected their fallen disciple, leaving his ultimate fate, like his life, defined by a lingering mystery.
