TV-Series
Description
Momonga, who later adopts the name Ainz Ooal Gown, is the main protagonist of the series. In his original life, he was an ordinary Japanese salaryman named Satoru Suzuki, a diligent but socially isolated individual with no real family or friends to support him outside of the game. He dedicated most of his time to the online role-playing game YGGDRASIL, where he was a member of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown. When the game’s servers were about to shut down, he logged in one final time to wait in the guild’s base. Instead of being disconnected, he found himself trapped in the game world, transformed into his avatar, a powerful level one hundred undead magic caster known as an Overlord. All the non-player characters of the guild’s tomb came to life with their own wills and personalities. Because he is the last remaining player from his guild, he is regarded by the NPCs as the highest of the forty-one Supreme Beings and the guild master. He takes the name Ainz Ooal Gown to carry on the legacy of his guild.

Ainz is defined by a careful, cautious, and meticulous nature. He always tries to plan ahead and control every detail, preferring to avoid any haphazard actions. Because he never underestimates his opponents, he tends to use overwhelming force even against weaker enemies. However, since being transported into this new world and becoming a true undead being, his emotions are heavily suppressed. He finds himself becoming cold, calculating, and detached. His loyalty is directed firmly toward his friends who created the guild and toward the NPCs of Nazarick, whom he treats with a paternal sense of responsibility and care. He acts with a degree of nobility in order to lead his followers properly, seeing himself as their last Supreme Being and a figure they can rely upon. At the same time, he is secretive and anxious about maintaining his image as an all-knowing ruler, often pretending to understand plans that his subordinates present to him. He does not hate humans and is not gratuitously cruel, but he holds no deep attachment to them and feels nothing toward their deaths; he will kill without hesitation if it benefits Nazarick or himself. He has a competitive streak regarding technology and development in the new world, and he values knowledge above almost everything else.

Ainz’s primary motivation is the protection and expansion of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. He seeks to understand the rules of the new world, gather information about other possible players from YGGDRASIL, and secure the safety and prestige of his guild. He also works to build a reputation for the name Ainz Ooal Gown, ensuring it becomes legendary. Though he occasionally displays a sense of justice, especially when confronted with unfairness, his overall drive is pragmatic: he does what is necessary to preserve Nazarick and to create a stable kingdom where his followers can thrive.

In the story, Ainz serves as both the central protagonist and an anti-hero or antagonist from the perspective of the world around him. He establishes the Sorcerer Kingdom and rules as the Sorcerer King, the most powerful magic caster in the world. He also adopts a second identity as Momon, a dark warrior who becomes an adamantite-ranked adventurer, in order to gather intelligence and influence events from within human society. His role drives nearly every major plot development, from conquering territories and manipulating politics to confronting powerful enemies who possess world-class items. His actions reshape the entire political landscape of the new world.

Ainz’s key relationships are with the NPCs of Nazarick, particularly the floor guardians. Albedo, the overseer of the guardians, is utterly devoted to him and harbors romantic feelings that he cannot reciprocate out of respect for her creators. Demiurge, the master strategist, interprets Ainz’s often uncertain decisions as brilliant schemes, reinforcing the perception of Ainz as a genius ruler. Shalltear Bloodfallen, a powerful vampire, is fiercely loyal after Ainz revives her following a battle where he was forced to kill her due to brainwashing. Sebas Tian serves with his own sense of honor. Pandora’s Actor, the doppelganger created by Ainz himself, is treated with a mix of fondness and embarrassment. Ainz values each of these followers deeply, viewing them as children or extensions of his former friends.

Over the course of the series, Ainz develops from a reluctant and insecure ruler into a more confident and decisive leader. He becomes more comfortable with his authority and more willing to commit to large-scale conquest. His undead nature deepens the emotional detachment that was already growing, making him less conflicted about morally questionable actions. He also becomes more paranoid and hostile toward any potential threats that could harm Nazarick, especially those wielding world-class items. Despite this, he retains a desire to rule peacefully where possible and continues to show benevolence toward those who serve him well.

Ainz possesses a vast array of abilities stemming from his level one hundred build as an Overlord and a necromancer. He has access to over seven hundred spells, including high-tier offensive magic, instant-death spells such as Grasp Heart and True Death, reality-warping abilities like Reality Slash, time manipulation in the form of Time Stop, and super-tier spells such as Fallen Down and The Goal of All Life Is Death, which can bypass immunities and kill nearly anything within its area. He can summon hundreds of undead minions as well as powerful elementals and other creatures. He retains the items from YGGDRASIL, including world-class items that grant effects beyond normal magic. He is also capable of resurrection, both through gold from his treasury and through specialized items. His undead physiology makes him immune to many weaknesses of living beings, such as poison, disease, and the need for sleep. His greatest limitation is his vulnerability to holy magic and his own inability to feel strong emotions, which sometimes leaves him disconnected from the reactions of others.
