Description
Dyne Woodwonder is a supporting character in the second volume of the light novel series and its anime adaptation. He is a member of the Swords of Darkness, a silver-ranked adventurer team based in the city of E-Rantel. Dyne serves as the group's druid, a class that focuses on nature-based magic and support.
Physically, Dyne is described as having a robust and corpulent build, with a thick, unruly beard around his mouth that gives him an almost barbaric or wild appearance. His eyes are often depicted as narrow slits, and he carries the subtle scent of herbs due to the medicinal plants he always keeps on his person. His primary weapon is a mace, which he uses in close combat.
In terms of personality, Dyne is the calm and rational anchor of the Swords of Darkness. He is known for his composed and thoughtful demeanor, often acting as the voice of reason during the group's discussions. He speaks with an affirmative and formal tone, frequently ending his sentences with a distinctive verbal tic that sounds like "desu" or a declarative "est," which conveys a sense of serious and objective reasoning. Despite his reserved nature, he possesses a strong sense of confidence in his own abilities, particularly regarding his knowledge of the forest and druidic magic, and he does not hesitate to assert that he is more capable than his comrade, the ranger Lukrut, when in a woodland environment. While proud of his skills, he is fundamentally a kind, friendly, and reliable companion.
The story introduces Dyne when he and his party encounter the protagonists Momon (the alter ego of Ainz Ooal Gown) and Nabe at the Adventurer's Guild. Seeing them as potential allies, Dyne invites them to join the Swords of Darkness on a quest. Initially planning to hunt monsters for coin, the party is instead hired to escort the pharmacist Nfirea Bareare to the village of Carne. During this journey, Dyne demonstrates his practical skills as a druid and his supportive role within the party. He respects Momon greatly for his immense strength, referring to him as master Momon. Within his own group, he shares a close friendship with the leader Peter Mauk and the young magic caster Ninya, whom he actively protects during battles. His relationship with Lukrut is that of a friendly rival, with Dyne considering himself the superior survivalist.
His development is cut tragically short. After returning to E-Rantel from the successful escort mission, Dyne and his companions are ambushed by the psychotic assassin Clementine. In the ensuing fight, he tells Ninya to flee with Nfirea and bravely tries to hold Clementine off alongside his other comrades, but they are all killed. In a final act of desecration, Clementine, with the help of her accomplice Khajit, uses necromancy to reanimate the corpses of Dyne and his friends as undead zombies. When Momon arrives at the scene, a zombified Dyne attacks him, forcing the warrior to destroy the reanimated body, granting Dyne a final, tragic end.
As a druid, Dyne Woodwonder possesses a variety of notable abilities focused on support, control, and healing. He has extensive knowledge of herbalism and natural remedies. In combat, he employs spells that manipulate the environment. He can use Plant Growth to rapidly expand nearby vegetation, creating cover or obstacles. His signature magical ability is Twine Plant, which causes the grass and weeds at an enemy's feet to transform into rope-like vines that coil around the target, strong enough to immobilize a powerful creature like an ogre. He can also cast Light Healing, a first-tier spell used to treat minor wounds, solidifying his role as the party's primary healer.
