Ains Ooal Gown is the supreme ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick and the founder of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Originally a lonely salaryman named Suzuki Satoru in a dystopian future, he spent his days in a dead-end job, finding his only genuine connection in the virtual reality game Yggdrasil as a magic caster and guild master. When the game’s servers shut down, he was transported into his avatar’s body along with the entire guild headquarters into a different world. Physically, he appears as a tall skeleton in ornate black and purple robes, with empty eye sockets that burn with a small red glow. His undead nature suppresses powerful emotions, making him cold and calculating, yet he remains deeply sentimental about his lost friends and treats the now-sentient NPCs of Nazarick like his own children. He is often anxious about making mistakes and failing to live up to the expectations of his devoted followers, leading him to overthink and improvise while they interpret his actions as masterful plans. Though he can show kindness to those loyal to him, he feels little connection to the people of the new world and can order massacres without remorse if it protects Nazarick. In the Halloween crossover special Ple Ple Pleiades x Kage-jitsu!, he experiences a body-swapping phenomenon that transfers his consciousness into the body of Shadow from The Eminence in Shadow. Awakening in this unfamiliar human form, he becomes cautious and panicked, forced to adopt Shadow’s grandiose persona to avoid exposing the swap while he tries to understand the situation and find a way back to his own body. Despite the comedy of the situation, his strategic thinking remains sharp, and he successfully deduces the path back to Nazarick.
