Movie
Description
Hiei is a Fleet of Fog fast battleship and a prominent character in the movie Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova Cadenza. She is a member of the Kongou-class, sharing her class with her sister ships Kongou, Haruna, and Kirishima. Within the First Oriental Fleet, Hiei serves as Kongou's second-in-command and often acts as the de facto leader of the fleet in her sister's absence.
Hiei's Mental Model, the avatar through which the ship interfaces with the world, appears as a young woman with long reddish-brown hair styled to resemble a cobra's hood and dark amber eyes. Reflecting her strict and orderly personality, she wears a red student-style dress uniform. A notable feature of her attire is an armband on her left sleeve that reads class representative, and she often carries a pen and notebook, reinforcing the disciplined, almost academic persona she adopts. This image is tied directly to her methods, as she attempts to bring order to the Fleet of Fog by modeling her command structure after a human school's student council.
In terms of personality, Hiei is characterized by her unwavering devotion, strictness, and a profound sense of duty. She is deeply loyal to Kongou, her flagship and idol, and is exceptionally respectful and formal, if sometimes to a mechanical or inflexible degree. Her desire to restore order within the Fleet of Fog, which she sees as having been disrupted by the actions of the submarine I-401 and the defections of other ships like Takao, is a primary motivation. To achieve this, she imposes a rigid, rule-based system on her fleet, expecting absolute discipline from her subordinates, including the heavy cruisers Myoukou, Nachi, Ashigara, and Haguro.
Hiei's central role in Cadenza is driven by her personal conflict. She idolized Kongou, who served as a primary antagonist in the preceding television series. When Kongou embarked on a destructive vendetta and subsequently isolated herself, Hiei felt a deep sense of betrayal. This loss forces her into a position of responsibility, tasked with hunting down I-401. She struggles with the fear that she might succumb to the same instability that consumed her sister, leading her to be even more rigid and strict with her own fleet than Kongou was. A significant part of her development involves her interactions with the powerful Fog battleship Musashi, who guides Hiei in contemplating the nature of happiness and her purpose. Ultimately, her arc culminates in a confrontation with the very person she admires most: Kongou. When Kongou returns and attacks her fleet during a mission, Hiei is forced to fight her former leader, an encounter that drains her will to fight before she eventually reconciles and chooses to follow Kongou on a new journey.
As a vessel, Hiei possesses the formidable arsenal typical of a Fog battleship. Her known armaments include numerous photon cannons, missile launchers, torpedo tubes, a high-voltage discharger, and a powerful Super-Graviton Cannon. In the Cadenza film, her capabilities are enhanced with a sniper system for her super-gravity cannon, allowing for precision long-range attacks, as well as the Mirror-Ring system, a device capable of deflecting enemy attacks such as super-gravity cannon fire.
