Movie
Description
Iona is the physical manifestation of a Mental Model, a humanoid avatar representing the consciousness of the Fleet of Fog submarine I-401. She is one of the oldest Mental Models in existence, having been active long enough to develop a deep understanding of human customs and behavior after spending around two years among people. Her physical appearance is that of a young girl with pale skin, long hair that is primarily white with a blue tint, and green eyes.
In terms of personality, Iona is predominantly calm, quiet, and reserved, often speaking in a soft, level tone. Despite her stoic and emotionless demeanor, she is consistently helpful and supportive towards her captain and crew, even taking part in everyday tasks like cleaning and cooking. While she generally avoids unnecessary risk, she has developed a strong trust in her captain, Gunzou Chihaya, and frequently agrees to follow his daring and unconventional plans. She has a fondness for watching anime and is known to play with starfish. Although she initially describes herself purely as a weapon built for battle, her extensive time with humans leads her to gradually question her own existence and purpose.
Iona's primary motivation and driving purpose originate from the flagship Yamato. Before being sunk, Yamato issued a final order for a submarine to find Gunzou Chihaya and become his vessel. Consequently, Iona effectively carries Yamato's will, described by other Fleet of Fog vessels as Yamato's puppet, with the ultimate goal of bridging the gap between humanity and the Fleet of Fog to end their war.
Within the story of Cadenza, Iona serves as the central figure around which the conflict revolves. The massive Fog vessel Musashi seeks to absorb Iona, who carries within her the dual Union Cores of both herself and Yamato, to gain control over the Admiralty Code, the collective will of the Fleet of Fog. Her role is that of a key player in the battle for the future of the Fog, guided by the mission instilled in her by Yamato.
Iona's most significant relationship is with Captain Gunzou Chihaya, whom she serves loyally and considers a dear friend. She has notable connections with other Mental Models who have allied with humanity. Hyuuga, for instance, holds an obsessive admiration for Iona, viewing her as a goddess of war and frequently performing repairs and upgrades on her hull. Takao, another ally, initially began as an enemy but later joined their cause; she tends to view Iona as a rival for Gunzou's affection. Her relationship with Kongō, a former enemy battleship, evolves significantly after an intense battle, leading Iona to befriend her and help her realize the loneliness of her previous existence.
Throughout the series, Iona undergoes significant development, moving from a being who exists solely to follow orders to one who demonstrates genuine human-like growth. She learns to act more independently and expresses clear displeasure, particularly when Hyuuga's affections become overbearing. In Cadenza, her development reaches a critical point when she helps defeat Musashi, after which she transforms into the Admiralty Code herself and disappears, bidding farewell to Gunzou.
As a Mental Model of a highly advanced Fog vessel, Iona possesses numerous notable abilities. Her base submarine, the I-401, is exceptionally fast, capable of reaching 80 knots while submerged. It is armed with a formidable arsenal including corrosive warhead torpedoes, photon cannons, missile launchers, and a super-graviton cannon, which delivers a powerful gravitational attack. The vessel is protected by wave-force armor, a defensive shield that can withstand a direct hit from another super-graviton cannon. Iona herself can create lesser copies of her own body to assist with multiple tasks simultaneously, a rare ability shared only with Takao. Most significantly, it is revealed that Iona literally is the Joint Tactical Network of the Fleet of Fog, a fact even she does not consciously know, granting her a profound and fundamental connection to all other Fog vessels.
