Description
Haruna is the advanced Mental Model of the former Fleet of Fog battleship that shares her name. In her humanoid form, she has a composed and gentle appearance characterized by long blonde hair, purple eyes, and a wardrobe that includes a long black coat which she can often be seen wearing. Her visual design reflects her calm and serious nature, with her expressions ranging from focused determination to a soft, gentle smile.

As a Mental Model, Haruna is a sophisticated quantum computer consciousness given physical form through nanomaterials. Her background is rooted in her former existence as a warship of the Fog, a mysterious fleet that once waged war against humanity. After her original ship body was sunk in battle, her Union Core survived, allowing her to manifest as a Mental Model on land. This transition from a vessel of war to an individual walking among humans marks a significant turning point in her existence.

Haruna develops a personality that contrasts sharply with her origins as a weapon of war. While she initially appears reserved and duty-bound, her experiences reveal a deeply compassionate core. She is thoughtful and introspective, capable of forming strong emotional bonds with humans despite her nature as a being built for combat. Her personality becomes particularly evident through her friendship with Makie Osakabe, a human girl who finds and befriends her. Haruna begins to adopt human-like emotions and values, leading her to reject her original programming to destroy humanity. This internal conflict is demonstrated when she faces human soldiers and refuses to use lethal force, even when it would be the most efficient way to protect herself, because she knows Makie would not want her to be that way. This restraint leaves her vulnerable and ultimately pinned down, yet she holds to her newfound principles.

Her primary motivation shifts from simply existing as a Fog asset to protecting her cherished bond with Makie. She acts out of a desire to understand and preserve her connection with humans, even at great personal risk. This motivation drives her to defy her own kind and endure significant damage to ensure her friend's safety. She comes to value friendship and loyalty over her original mission, seeking to coexist rather than conquer.

Within the story of Cadenza, Haruna serves as a crucial supporting character alongside other reformed Fog vessels such as Iona and Takao. She and her companion Kirishima, another Mental Model often found in a stuffed bear form, assist the crew of the I-401 and their human allies. Haruna represents the possibility of peace between humans and the Fog, embodying the proof that the two sides need not be enemies. Her presence and actions help the main characters in their larger conflict, lending her strength to their cause when she is needed.

Her key relationships are central to her identity. Her friendship with Makie is the most significant, as the girl's acceptance teaches Haruna about kindness and love, reshaping her worldview. She also shares a strong bond with Kirishima, her fellow former battleship and sister vessel. The two operate together frequently, with Kirishima serving as a close ally who supports Haruna's decisions. Furthermore, she interacts with other major characters like Gunzou Chihaya and his crew, though her personal development is most closely tied to her civilian friends.

Haruna undergoes profound development from a weapon to a being with genuine emotion and moral conviction. Her journey is one of self-discovery; she learns that her purpose is not defined solely by her creation as a tool of war. By sacrificing her own safety to protect Makie and refusing to harm humans, she evolves beyond her initial programming, demonstrating emotional growth and empathy. She learns that bonds of friendship are worth fighting for, and that protecting what she loves is a choice she can make for herself.

As a Mental Model, Haruna possesses a suite of remarkable abilities derived from her nanomaterial construction and advanced computational power. She has superhuman physical strength, capable of tearing apart military tanks with her bare hands and making incredible leaps over vast distances. She is protected by a Wave-Force Armor, also known as a Klein Field, which acts as a powerful defensive barrier that can absorb and redirect energy from incoming attacks. This field can also be projected outward to generate offensive blunt-force attacks, such as crushing objects or pushing enemies away. Even without her full ship body, her Mental Model is highly resistant to conventional weaponry. She can also shape-shift to a limited degree, typically using this ability to alter her clothing or other minor details. Her processing power grants her extraordinary genius-level intelligence, allowing her to perform calculations far beyond human capability. She can also generate decoys of herself or others, as she does when creating a diversion to protect Makie. These formidable abilities make her a powerful ally, though her reluctance to use lethal force often tempers her actions in combat.
