Description
Gakushou is a character from the anime Chaos Dragon who serves as a general from the militaristic nation of Kouran. She is introduced as a merciless and ambitious warlord, embodying the ruthless nature of her country’s leadership. Despite her fearsome reputation as a villain, she operates with a distinct set of principles. Her approach to warfare and personal relationships is defined by a code of honor; she is not dishonest and refuses to form alliances or contracts with individuals she does not genuinely value. This principled stance makes her a more sympathetic and compelling figure than a typical antagonist. For instance, her attitude toward sex mirrors her attitude toward combat, as she rejects a sincere romantic advance from the treacherous assassin Lou, not because she finds Lou unattractive, but because she lacks respect for her. This unwavering integrity also governs her political actions, as she makes overtures of alliance toward her rival Ulrika and her enemy Eykha after a treaty is finalized.

Within the story, Gakushou’s primary role is as a formidable opponent who becomes a temporary, uneasy ally to the main party on their journey to the Ogani Volcano. A key relationship is her prior connection with her superior, Ka Grava, which is portrayed as highly significant to her. Her interactions with the protagonist, Ibuki, are also notable; though their relationship is initially adversarial, she treats him with a degree of kindness on one occasion after having nearly executed him. Her character arc is tragically cut short when a sudden flood of the undead, known as the Returned Ones, overruns the group. Gakushou is transformed into one of these mindless, murderous zombies. Her fate becomes a point of emotional turmoil for Ibuki, who becomes irrationally determined to use the Red Dragon’s cursed power to sacrifice her undead form for revenge against whoever is responsible. This plan is rendered moot when a soldier from the Nil Kamui rebellion kills her humanely, putting her out of her misery before Ibuki can act. Her development is thus cut short, with her demise serving as a sudden and tragic end to a character who had just begun to show a more nuanced, principled side. As a general, she is a capable fighter, though her most notable abilities are her leadership on the battlefield and her formidable strength as a warrior.
