Description
Meilin Li is a fictional character who appears in the anime adaptation of Cardcaptor Sakura and its second feature film, Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card. She is not present in the original manga, having been created specifically for the animated version of the story. A member of the prominent Li clan of Hong Kong, Meilin is the first cousin of Syaoran Li and, at the time of her introduction, also considers herself his fiancée.
Meilin is a young girl who stands out for her energetic and often hot-tempered personality. She is deeply devoted to Syaoran, a devotion that stems from a childhood event in Hong Kong where a young, reserved Syaoran braved a rainstorm to retrieve her escaped pet bird. Touched by his quiet kindness, she confessed her feelings to him shortly after and, with his reluctant agreement, declared them engaged under the promise that she would release him if he ever found someone he loved more than her. Her defining trait is this fierce loyalty, which initially manifests as jealousy and competitiveness, particularly towards Sakura Kinomoto, whom she instantly views as a rival for Syaoran's attention.
In the story, Meilin relocates to Tomoeda to support Syaoran in his mission to capture the Clow Cards. Her role is unique because, unlike her cousin, she possesses no magical abilities whatsoever. To compensate, she relies entirely on her impressive physical skills, having trained alongside Syaoran in martial arts from a very young age. She is a capable and determined hand-to-hand combatant, and while she believes her physical prowess will be an asset, her lack of magic often leads her to unintentionally hinder Syaoran’s captures rather than help, a fact that frustrates both of them. However, there are instances where her skills prove invaluable, such as when her synchronized fighting style with Syaoran, honed through years of practice, is the key to defeating The Twin card.
Throughout the series, Meilin undergoes significant personal development. Her initial aggressive and somewhat immature rivalry with Sakura gradually softens into a genuine and valued friendship. The pivotal moment of her character arc occurs during a later visit to Tomoeda. Having matured and become more perceptive, she recognizes that Syaoran has fallen in love with Sakura. In a display of great emotional strength and care for her cousin, she honors their childhood promise, tearfully breaks off the engagement herself, and steps aside so he can be happy. Heartbroken yet resolute, she finds comfort with her friend Tomoyo Daidouji, venting her sorrow before returning to Hong Kong.
In Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, Meilin returns to Tomoeda for a visit alongside Syaoran. Her role in the film has evolved from a romantic rival to a supportive friend. She partners with Tomoyo in a well-meaning scheme to create opportunities for Sakura to confess her own feelings to Syaoran, showing that she has fully accepted and now champions their relationship. During the film's climax, she is among those who are temporarily erased by the powerful Nothing Card, only to be restored after Sakura successfully seals it. Her final appearance in the original anime's continuity thus completes her transformation from a jealous self-proclaimed fiancée to a loyal and mature friend who values the happiness of those she loves above her own past desires. Among her notable abilities, aside from her exceptional martial arts skills and physical strength, she also demonstrates perceptive combat instincts, able to analyze a magical situation and suggest effective strategies despite having no magic herself, such as advising Sakura to use The Freeze card in a battle.
