Yukana Nogami
Description
Yukana is a prominent Japanese voice actress and singer born on January 6, 1975, in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. She is affiliated with the talent agency Sigma Seven. Her real name is Yukana Nogami, which she used early in her career before adopting the mononymous stage name Yukana in 2001, a change she made with the desire for others to call her by only that name.
Her path to becoming a voice actor was shaped by a childhood marked by illness. During her youth, she was often unwell and was told by doctors that she might not live past the age of twenty. This experience led her to contemplate leaving a trace of her existence and pursue a career where the evaluation of her work would return directly to her. Acting became that chosen path, and voice acting, in particular, appealed to her because it allowed her to play any kind of character using only her voice. Her parents, both choir section leaders, provided an early foundation in the arts, exposing her to classical vocal training from a young age and piano lessons starting at five years old.
Yukana made her professional debut in 1993 while still a high school student, landing the lead role of Mirai Ozora in the original video animation series Moldiver. This debut also marked her entry as a singer, as she performed the series' theme songs. Her first leading role in a television anime came in 1995 with the title character Azusa "Azuki" Noyama in Azuki-chan. That same year, she voiced Yuri Tanima, one of the main characters in the magical girl series Wedding Peach. The late 1990s saw her take on a variety of prominent roles, including Meiling Li in Cardcaptor Sakura (1998) and the feline character Felicia in the OVA Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge (1997).
Her career continued to build momentum into the 2000s with several iconic performances. She was cast as Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa in the Full Metal Panic! series starting in 2002, a role that would become one of her most recognized. In 2004, she gained widespread popularity among a younger demographic as Honoka Yukishiro, one half of the titular heroic duo Cure White, in the long-running Pretty Cure franchise. Perhaps her most famous role came in 2006 when she was cast as the enigmatic and immortal C.C. in the hugely successful anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. This role solidified her status as a leading voice actress. Her filmography from this period and beyond is extensive, including parts such as Tear Grants in Tales of the Abyss (2008), the female form of the fox deity Kūgen in Our Home's Fox Deity (2008), Cecilia Alcott in Infinite Stratos (2011), and Kale in Dragon Ball Super (2017).
Yukana's career has not been without its changes and periods of transition. Early on, she changed agencies from Arts Vision to the music-focused IMADOKI, which unfortunately went bankrupt shortly after. She then operated her own one-person agency, Sailr, for a time. In the autumn of 1999, she temporarily paused her voice acting work to study in New York, though she continued to fulfill her anime commitments by returning to Japan monthly for recordings. Upon her return in the spring of 2000, she joined Sigma Seven, the agency she remains with today.
Known for her versatility, Yukana possesses a wide vocal range. Early in her career, she often played gentle or meek characters, but she has become equally renowned for portraying cool, collected, and sometimes tsundere-type roles, as exemplified by C.C.. She is also capable of lower vocal registers, demonstrating her range in roles like the mature Honoka Yukishiro. Beyond her voice work, she is known for her love of cooking, often sharing her creations with colleagues, and her passion for cars and motorcycles, holding a license for large motorcycles. Within the voice acting community, she is particularly noted for her mentorship of a young Tomokazu Sugita, offering him encouragement and support during a difficult period in his early career.
