Description
Ibuki Momoi is a central character in the anime Dai-Guard, serving as the navigator and second pilot of the giant robot. She is a twenty-year-old office lady working in the Public Relations Division of the 21st Century Security Guarantee company. As one of the original employees assigned to the division, she is the senior to her fellow pilots, Shunsuke Akagi and Keiichiro Aoyama, who are both five years older than her. Her physical appearance includes red hair and brown eyes.
Ibuki's background is deeply intertwined with the central conflict of the series. Her biological father was a scientist whose theories predicted the appearance of the alien monsters known as Heterodynes. He was killed during the first Heterodyne attack twelve years before the main story begins. This tragedy shaped her initial motivation for piloting Dai-Guard, as she sought revenge against the creatures responsible for her father’s death. She lives with her family, including a stepfather with whom she has a strained relationship, particularly concerning her dangerous role as a pilot.
Ibuki possesses a personality that is both rational and hard-working, serving as a grounded counterbalance to the more impulsive and enthusiastic Akagi. While she is not as quick to anger as Akagi, she has a notably hot-tempered side and demonstrates outstanding action ability when the situation demands it. In one instance, she manually climbed onto Dai-Guard's arm without any safety equipment to fire a weapon that had malfunctioned from inside the cockpit. Despite this fiery streak, she is the most level-headed and detail-oriented member of the team. Her position as the number two pilot, marked by the number two on her pilot suit, reflects her role as a mediator who coordinates between the impulsive actions of Akagi and the sometimes reluctant Aoyama. Her ability to make quick and precise summaries of an enemy Heterodyne's abilities and notice subtle flaws allows the team to defeat their foes with minimal casualties.
Her role in the story is defined by her position as the navigator in the second cockpit of Dai-Guard. While Akagi focuses on piloting the robot's body and Aoyama manages its legs and balance, Ibuki handles the systems and sensors, providing critical tactical analysis during battles. Her presence is essential for the robot to function effectively as a team. Her key relationships are with her fellow pilots, especially Akagi, with whom she shares a close bond that sometimes hints at a possible romance. She also has a significant relationship with her stepfather, who initially opposes her piloting but ultimately becomes the person who helps her understand the truth about her biological father and resolve her personal demons. Her relationship with the military advisor Shirota is often antagonistic, as she stands up to his rigid, regulation-heavy approach.
Ibuki undergoes a significant character development arc when she learns the less-than-heroic truth about her father's death. It is revealed that he was not a martyr who died saving others, but was simply fascinated by the Heterodyne and ran towards the creature to see his theories proven, abandoning his daughter in the process. This revelation leaves her without an emotional anchor, causing her to lose her sense of purpose and withdraw from piloting. She falls into a state of despair and temporarily quits the team. However, her stepfather helps her understand that the reason for fighting is less important than the act of saving people in the present. Ultimately, Akagi and Aoyama convince her to return, emphasizing that the team needs her and that they can rely on each other. She returns to her position with a new, more mature resolve to fight for the safety of others rather than for revenge.
Her notable abilities are primarily analytical rather than physical. While she is capable of brave and even reckless physical action, her true strength lies in her sharp observational skills and tactical mind. She can quickly process complex data about an enemy's structure and behavior, identifying critical weaknesses that allow the team to land a decisive blow. This ability makes her an invaluable navigator and strategist for Dai-Guard.
