TV-Series
Description
Opaopa is a small, egg-shaped companion robot who serves the elite White Nuts unit in the anime Zillion. He is created by Dave, the team's mechanic and support specialist, and he begins the series as the unit's mascot and helper robot before gradually becoming a full member of the group. Unlike the character of the same name from Sega's Fantasy Zone video game series, this version of Opaopa carries no weapons and does not participate directly in combat; his value to the team lies in his artificial intelligence and his many support functions.
In appearance, Opaopa is a compact robot roughly 38 centimeters tall and weighing about 17 kilograms. He has an egg-shaped body with a blue canopy, white dotted eyes, a red rear section, a green underside, and two short legs that are golden or orange in color and slightly bird-like in shape. Small wings are attached to his back. He is able to float through the air using an anti-gravity unit, can propel himself by moving his wings, and can also walk upright on his two legs when on the ground. A manipulator arm is stored inside his canopy and can be extended when he needs to handle objects.
Opaopa's personality is cheerful, optimistic, and earnest. He is eager to be helpful and to take part in the activities of the team, even though the human members sometimes overlook or dismiss him. He communicates in simple, halting electronic speech, frequently repeating his own name as a catchphrase, and his canopy lights up or blinks as part of his expression. Early in the series, he tends to be little more than background decoration, but over time he becomes more involved in the team's missions and is given moments that highlight his courage and loyalty. In one notable situation, he is willing to throw himself into a hopeless battle in order to protect his friends, even when they have been treating him poorly. His earnest desire to be accepted and useful is his central motivation, and his bond with the team deepens as the story progresses.
In terms of abilities, Opaopa possesses a genuine artificial intelligence. He is capable of linking himself to network computers, and he has the ability to analyze and translate the ancient language of Maris, which proves valuable when the team encounters relics and inscriptions from the planet's forgotten civilization. He can carry out reconnaissance and deliver messages, and his small size allows him to move through spaces that are difficult for the human characters to reach. He is not a fighter, but his knowledge, mobility, and devotion make him a dependable support companion.
Opaopa's key relationship is with Dave, his creator, who maintains him and eventually builds him a companion. After Opaopa expresses feelings of loneliness, Dave constructs a similar robot named Upaupa to be his sister, and the two share the same artificial intelligence, speech patterns, and language-analysis abilities; Upaupa can be distinguished by her different color scheme and her habit of repeating her own name. Opaopa also forms warm bonds with the main members of the White Nuts, especially with the hotheaded J.J., who gives him a pair of handmade eyebrows. From that point onward, Opaopa attaches the eyebrows to his face with his manipulator arm whenever he is in a serious mode, and the gesture becomes a small sign of his personality and his place within the group.
Over the course of the series, Opaopa develops from a largely decorative mascot into a recognized member of the White Nuts, earning a more prominent role in the story and even receiving an episode centered on him and his sister. His arc is one of quiet growth: a small, overlooked machine who proves through loyalty, bravery, and intelligence that he is a true part of the team.
