Chieko Honda
Description
Chieko Honda was a Japanese actress and voice actress, born on March 28, 1963, in Tokyo, Japan. She passed away on February 18, 2013, at the age of 49.
Honda's career in the voice acting industry began in 1983 after she graduated from the training school affiliated with the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society (Haikyō). Her debut role was as Machiko Sugata in the television anime series Plawres Sanshiro. A significant early role came in 1984 when she was cast as Amu Fanneria in Heavy Metal L-Gaim, a part that helped bring her to the attention of anime fans. Her breakthrough, however, followed in 1986 with her performance as Elpeo Ple in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, a role that earned her recognition as a leading voice actress of her time and won awards for best female character from publications like Anime Grand Prix.
Over her three-decade career, Honda built an extensive filmography, becoming known for her versatility in portraying a wide range of characters, particularly energetic girls and action-oriented roles. She had a long association with the Sunrise studio and the Gundam franchise, voicing characters such as Ennil El in After War Gundam X and Cynthia in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, in addition to her acclaimed work in Gundam ZZ. Other notable television anime roles included Kurumi Kasuga in Kimagure Orange Road (1987), Sarah Frances Russell in Lady Lady!! (1987), the title character Mary Bell in Floral Magician Mary Bell (1992), Tellu in Sailor Moon S (1994), Kozue Kaoru in Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997), Meroko Yui in Full Moon o Sagashite (2002), and Marie Mjolnir in Soul Eater (2008). She also had a significant role in the long-running series Kiteretsu Daihyakka, taking over the part of Miyoko Nonoka from another actress, with the transition reportedly going unnoticed even by the manga's creator.
In addition to television, Honda was a prolific performer in Original Video Animations (OVAs). Her numerous credits in this format included Amy in the Gall Force series (1986), Miku Himuro in Hades Project Zeorymer (1988), Chelsea in Riding Bean (1989), Rika Nakamura in 1+2=Paradise (1990), Miya Igarashi in Here is Greenwood (1991), and Natasha in Tekkaman Blade II (1994). She was also active in video games, with roles such as Yayoi Katsuragi in the EVE series and Haruka Yuzuhara in ToHeart 2.
Throughout her career, Honda was affiliated with several talent agencies. She left Haikyō around 1988 or 1989 and worked as a freelancer for nearly 20 years. She later joined Max Mix in 2008 before becoming a freelancer again in 2010. Her final agency affiliation, from November 2012 until her death, was Aoni Production.
Beyond voice acting, Honda was active as a singer and performer. She released solo CDs in the 1990s and was part of several musical units. These included the group CHOKI!! with fellow cast members from the anime Shōwa Ahozōshi Akanuke Ichiban! and, later, The Ripple with voice actresses Hisako Kyōda and Maria Kawamura. She had a long-running creative partnership with Kawamura, with whom she co-starred in Heavy Metal L-Gaim. The pair held live concerts in 1998 to commemorate Honda's 15th anniversary in the industry and again in 2009 for her 25th anniversary.
Her work was respected by her peers and other creators. Manga artist Kōsuke Fujishima, a fan of Honda's, named a character after her in his series Oh My Goddess!; Honda would later go on to voice that character, Chieko Honda, in a CD drama for the series. Chieko Honda passed away on February 18, 2013, after battling multiple forms of cancer.
