Description
Sara Russell, elder half-sister to Lynn Russell, was born to George Russell and his first wife Frances, who died during Sara's birth. This loss fostered Sara's early emotional distance and isolation. With no memory of her mother, Sara inherits only Frances's flute and musical score as keepsakes.

Sara initially resents Lynn's arrival at Marble Mansion, viewing her as an intruder and a symbol of George's marriage to Misuzu. Her coldness leads her to reject Lynn's gestures, like a bouquet of flowers. Sara feels neglected by George due to his work absences and focus on Lynn's adjustment. A chronic illness requiring periodic sanatorium stays deepens her loneliness and reinforces her aloofness.

Despite her hostility, Sara develops a protective bond with Lynn. She intervenes against bullying by step-siblings Thomas and Mary Waverly and mistreatment by step-aunt Madeleine. Sara demonstrates loyalty by defending Lynn against false accusations, such as when Lynn is wrongly blamed for harming Edward Brighton. Sara's childhood friendship with Arthur Brighton evolves into mutual romantic feelings. Their eventual marriage contrasts with Lynn's more tumultuous relationship with Arthur's brother Edward.

Sara possesses artistic talents, excelling in painting and flute playing. Her physical appearance reflects her heritage, featuring straight blonde hair, blue eyes, and a resemblance to Frances. Sara's character arc involves overcoming emotional barriers to embrace her role as Lynn's sister and confidante. This includes supporting Lynn's aspirations like the Lady's Crest award and participating in family traditions such as Christmas celebrations and vacations with George and Lynn.

The anime adaptation portrays Sara's initial antagonism less severely than the manga, omitting scenes where she openly declares hatred for Lynn or unfavorably compares Edward to Arthur. Instead, it emphasizes her inherent kindness, depicting her immediate comfort to Lynn upon learning of Misuzu's death and her consistent advocacy against the Waverlys' cruelty. Sara's journey concludes with her integration into the Brighton family through marriage to Arthur, symbolizing her emotional healing and acceptance of familial love.
