Description
Izuna Hazuki is a character from the supernatural manga and anime series Jigoku Sensei Nube, also known as Hell Teacher Nube. She is a teenager who works as an Itako, a traditional Japanese spiritual medium with the ability to communicate with the dead and perceive the spirit world. In the narrative, she is also referred to as a Reibaishi, a spiritual medium who exorcises evil spirits for a living. She first appears as a 14-year-old second-year middle school student who came from Akita to the city, hoping to make money with her exorcism powers. Three years after the events of the main story, Izuna becomes a 17-year-old high school girl living in Shinjuku and becomes the central character of her own spin-off manga series, Reibaishi Izuna: The Spiritual Medium, followed by a sequel titled Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension. It is noted that the spin-off takes place in an alternate timeline from the main Jigoku Sensei Nube story.

In terms of personality, Izuna is depicted as a capable and determined individual who uses her spiritual talents to help people tormented by supernatural forces. However, she also has a strong interest in money, spiritual power, and the physical appearance of men. Some portrayals highlight a more ditzy or amateurish side to her character, suggesting that her methods can sometimes be imperfect and lead to additional complications. Despite this, she is a dedicated exorcist who relies on her inherent abilities and her partnership with a spiritual companion. Her primary motivation is to earn a living by using her skills, as she comes to the city with the hope of making a lot of money through her exorcism work. She also desires to improve her spiritual power.

Izuna's role in the story is that of an exorcist who confronts evil spirits that prey on human weaknesses such as insecurities, emotional stress, and personal vulnerabilities, amplifying negative energy until it causes harm. She is one of several exorcists operating in the same world as the main protagonist, Meisuke Nueno, also known as Nube. Their paths cross as they both deal with supernatural threats, and their relationship is primarily professional. Nube has borrowed her spiritual tools, specifically her Kuda-gitsune, to create his own spiritual familiar. The students of Domori Elementary are fascinated by her performances as a medium and view her spiritual work as exciting magic tricks.

Key relationships in Izuna's life include her family and spiritual allies. She originally harbored hatred for her father due to his prioritizing his own work and career over his family, going as far as not showing up during her mother's funeral. However, after her father protected her from being killed by a demon named Dagoki, she forgave him and finally called him father for the first time since her mother's death. Since then, Izuna has been continuously searching for Dagoki to take revenge for her father's death. Her step-grandmother and master is named Okojiyo. She also has a disciple named Rin, and a rival named Chikara whom she eventually works together with as allies after discovering Genzan's true nature and following Rin's death.

Regarding her development, Izuna undergoes significant growth both in her abilities and personal relationships. Her journey from a young medium hoping to make money to a more seasoned exorcist is explored in depth within her own spin-off series. The storyline of Reibaishi Izuna reveals a complex alternate timeline where the main protagonist Meisuke Nueno lost his life against Byakko to protect her and his students, a timeline that was ultimately altered by the end of the Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension manga. Her most notable ability is her connection to a Kuda or Kuda-gitsune, which is a fox-like spirit pet that serves as her partner in her line of work, helping her detect the presence of evil spirits and assisting in their destruction. She also possesses other supernatural skills, including Kudakitsune manipulation, physical possession and enhancement, and Itako trance, which is the ability to serve as a spirit medium.
