Description
Meroko Yui is a shinigami, a death god, who serves in the Death Pediatrics Ward. In her former human life, she was known as Moe Rikyou, but upon death and becoming a shinigami, she took on a new name. She is part of the shinigami team Negi Ramen and is initially assigned alongside her partner and love interest, Takuto Kira, to collect the soul of twelve-year-old Mitsuki Kouyama. Meroko has a distinctive appearance with long pink hair and magenta eyes, and she is a rabbit-type shinigami, complete with long ears that allow her to transform into an anthropomorphic bunny stuffed toy. In the anime, she often uses the phrase "Mero Mero Change!" when altering her appearance.
Her personality is marked by a hot temper and moodiness, particularly regarding her feelings for Takuto, whom she pursues one-sidedly with little success. Despite her romantic frustrations, she possesses a good heart and genuinely tries to help Mitsuki achieve her dream of becoming a singer, though her well-meaning but clumsy ideas frequently land the girl in trouble. Around other shinigami, she can be playful and jealous, traits that are often the source of comedic moments.
Meroko's motivations are closely tied to her unrequited love for Takuto and her sense of duty as a shinigami. However, as the story progresses, her role evolves from simply being a soul collector into a more protective and caring figure in Mitsuki's life. She develops from a jealous and sometimes antagonistic presence into a loyal supporter of Mitsuki, showing a deeper bond. Her key relationships include her partnership with Takuto, defined by her persistent affection and his obliviousness or lack of reciprocation; her connection with Mitsuki, which grows from a professional assignment into genuine friendship; and her former partnership with Izumi, a shinigami she was previously partnered with and for whom she once held feelings. In terms of abilities, beyond her rabbit transformation and the power to change her appearance, Meroko's role as a shinigami involves overseeing souls and carrying out the duties of her ward. Over the course of the series, she shows development through her growing capacity for selflessness and emotional maturity, moving beyond her initial jealousy to become a steadfast ally.
