Description
Kakeru Oozora is a character who appears in the Sailor Moon S movie, an adaptation of a short story from the original manga. He is a young man living in Tokyo who works as an astronomer, driven by a deep and abiding passion for the cosmos. His name carries a symbolic meaning, translating to flying in space, which reflects his core aspirations and dreams.

In terms of personality, Kakeru is characterized by a romantic and idealistic nature. He is a firm believer in the Japanese legend of Princess Kaguya, a princess from the moon, and he maintains that a kingdom once existed there long ago. This conviction sets him apart from his peers in the scientific community, who dismiss his fantasies as unscientific and unrealistic. While he is a brilliant scientist, his tendency to mix rigorous astronomy with mythological wonder leads others, including his girlfriend, to view him as peculiar or unable to accept reality. Despite this gentle eccentricity, he is also a courageous and compassionate person, demonstrated when he risks his own safety to rescue a cat from being hit by a car.

Kakerus primary motivation is his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut. This desire is closely linked to his romanticized view of the moon and his longing to prove the existence of his beloved Princess Kaguya. His role in the story begins when he witnesses a meteorite falling to Earth. He recovers a small, beautiful crystal from the impact site and takes it back to his observatory for study. Unbeknownst to him, this crystal is a fragment of the comet belonging to Princess Snow Kaguya, a villain who intends to freeze the planet. The crystal attaches itself to his life force, slowly draining his energy and causing him to become gravely ill as the antagonist seeks to retrieve it.

His most significant relationships are with two characters. His girlfriend is Himeko Nayotake, a pragmatic and famous astronaut chosen for the Luna Frontier Project. Their relationship is strained by his belief in the moon princess, as her realistic worldview clashes with his fantasies, creating a rift between them before she departs on a space mission. The other key relationship is with Luna, the feline advisor to the Sailor Guardians. After Kakeru saves Lunas life and tenderly nurses her back to health, she develops strong romantic feelings for him. Luna observes the disconnect between Kakeru and Himeko and later wishes to become human to help him.

Throughout the narrative, Kakeru undergoes significant development. As the crystal weakens him, he becomes despondent and wanders into a life-threatening snowstorm. In his moment of crisis, Luna, transformed into a human by the power of the Silver Crystal, appears to him as if she were his fantasy of Princess Kaguya. She takes him into space to see the Earth, the moon, and the sunrise, restoring his will to live. Through this experience, he comes to a realization about his true feelings and the importance of facing reality. He finally distinguishes between his fantasy of a moon princess and his genuine love for Himeko, and by the story's conclusion, he reconciles with her upon her return to Earth.

Regarding his abilities, Kakeru does not possess any supernatural powers. Instead, his notable abilities are intellectual and technical. He is a highly skilled and knowledgeable astronomer with a deep fascination for celestial bodies. Furthermore, he is resourceful and possesses the practical skills to care for others, as shown when he nurses an injured animal back to health in his apartment.
