Description
Michelle, known in the original Japanese as Michiru Kaiou, is the civilian identity of Sailor Neptune, a Sailor Guardian introduced in the third story arc of Sailor Moon, which includes Sailor Moon S: The Movie. She is a sixteen-year-old teenage schoolgirl who attends Mugen Academy and is an exceptionally talented violinist, with a deep passion for music that is central to her identity. She is also skilled in swimming and painting, and her dream is to become a professional violinist. Michelle is reincarnated from the Princess of Planet Neptune, and unlike the inner Sailor Guardians, she awakened to her powers on her own without being summoned by the moon cats.
Her personality is marked by elegance, sophistication, and a calm, graceful demeanor. She is generally polite and reserved, but she can display sharp anger when provoked and is occasionally cold or distant, especially when she perceives others as not taking their duties seriously. She is fully dedicated to her mission as a Sailor Guardian, approaching her role with a black-and-white sense of duty that does not allow for compromise. Michelle dislikes being patronized and will not indulge others simply to spare their feelings. Despite her composed exterior, she is deeply caring, particularly toward her partner.
Michelle's primary motivation is to protect the Solar System from external threats, a responsibility she shares with her partner and lover, Haruka Tenou, known as Sailor Uranus. Their relationship is the most important bond in her life; they are completely devoted to each other and act as a unified front in battle. Together, they serve as the outer guardians, focusing on threats from beyond the Solar System rather than internal dangers. In the events of Sailor Moon S: The Movie, they continue their mission to eliminate the Death Busters and protect the earthly realm, often acting independently of the inner Sailor Guardians due to their more ruthless, results-oriented approach.
Michelle possesses natural precognitive abilities, even in civilian form, often sensing evil presence by describing the sea as stormy. As Sailor Neptune, she wields powers associated with the ocean and deep waters, using signature attacks such as Deep Submerge, which unleashes a powerful blast of ocean energy. She also carries the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of the three talismans of the outer guardians, which reveals the truth and reflects enemies’ weaknesses. Her transformation is invoked with the phrase Neptune Planet Power, Make Up. She is a disciplined fighter who can be harsh when she believes others are underestimating themselves or the threat at hand, but she shows compassion and loyalty to those she trusts, especially Haruka. Throughout the film, she remains a steadfast and elegant guardian, balancing her artistic sensitivity with an unwavering commitment to her sacred duty.
