Description
Princess Snow Kaguya is the primary antagonist of the 1994 animated film Sailor Moon S: The Movie. She is an extraterrestrial ice entity, a humanoid alien whose true form is intrinsically linked to a comet that travels through space. In her humanlike appearance she is an adult woman with blue eyes, blue hair, and pointed ears, and she carries herself with the cold dignity of a queen.
Her origins are cosmic and ancient. Kaguya travels by comet from planet to planet, freezing entire worlds and adding them to her personal collection of frozen planets. Earth has always been her most sought-after prize. Long before the events of the film, she attempted to conquer Earth by sending crystals from her comet ahead of her so that the power of the crystals could cover the planet in ice. That attempt failed when she was struck by a great light, later revealed to be the power of the Silver Crystal, which drove her back into outer space and kept her bound to her icy comet. She then endured a long and painful journey through the galaxy.
In the story of the film, a fragment of her comet falls to Earth and is found by a young astronomer named Kakeru Ozora, who keeps it in his observatory. Because she cannot complete her invasion without the lost fragment, Kaguya sends her servants, the Snow Dancers, to search for it. The Snow Dancers bring freezing storms and attacks to Tokyo while the Sailor Guardians fight them. Unknown to Kakeru, the crystal slowly drains his life energy, and when Kaguya finally takes it from him, she throws it into the ocean, where it grows into a gigantic ice crystal that continues to consume his life force and begins freezing the entire world. Kaguya's power proves too great for the Sailor Guardians, and even Sailor Moon's empowered form cannot stop her ice attacks. In the end, Kaguya is destroyed when the Sailor Guardians unite their strength with the Silver Crystal, the same great light that had once banished her, and her comet and ice crystal are erased along with her.
