Description
R2000, also known as Masha, is a small robot companion in the anime Tokyo Mew Mew, where the English-language adaptation calls him Mini-Mew. He was created by Ryou Shirogane with the assistance of Keiichiro Akasaka as the first of their robot inventions, and he was given to Ichigo Momomiya shortly after she became a Mew Mew. His original designation was the model number R2000, but Ichigo renamed him Masha after her crush, Masaya Aoyama, and the robot gladly accepted the new name. The character's design and name originated in an early short story by the series creator, where he appeared as a very different kind of character, an intergalactic police officer rather than a robot companion.
In appearance, Masha is a small, round, pale pink creature shaped somewhat like a heart, with darker pink cat ears, large pink eyes, small red wings, and a fluffy red tail. He has a permanently flushed, blushing look. His behavior blends childlike enthusiasm with simple robotic traits, and he forms a deep attachment to Ichigo, enjoying her company and acting protectively toward her. His speech is normally limited to sounds such as "pi" and "tweet," although in the anime he is capable of short sentences, and in later appearances he becomes more articulate, even producing complete sentences and adopting quirky speech endings that give him a distinctive charm.
Masha's central motivation is to support Ichigo and the Mew Mews in their mission. He is eager to help during battles, though his attempts are not always effective. His main function is to detect Chimera Anima, the monster forms created when alien parasites infect living creatures, as well as to sense Mew Aqua, a special substance of great importance to the heroes. He also warns the team when danger is near and has demonstrated an ability to sense when one of the Mew Mews is in peril, such as alerting Ichigo that a fifth companion was in danger before that girl joined the group.
In his role as the team's mascot and assistant, Masha accompanies the Mew Mews on their missions. After a Chimera Anima is defeated, he swallows the jellyfish-like parasites that emerge from the defeated host, preventing them from causing further infection, and he can also return stolen souls to their original owners. A more significant ability is his capacity to merge with Mew Aqua to transform into the Mew Aqua Rod, a device that enables the Mew Mews to perform the Ribbon Aqua Drops healing attack.
Beyond Ichigo, Masha shares his loyalties with the other Mew Mews and with his creators, and a second robot named Ucha is later created as his counterpart. By the end of the original story, after the alien threat is resolved, Masha chooses to remain with Ichigo when she leaves for London with Masaya. His development across the series is marked by growing expressiveness, from a device that mostly chirps to a companion capable of clear speech and independent choice, a change that reflects his deepening bond with Ichigo.
